Coffee And Prostate Cancer

Well this is kind of interesting.

High coffee intake tied to lower prostate cancer risk - Health - CBC News

men who consumed coffee regularly had a reduced risk of lethal or advanced prostate cancer

Men who consumed the most coffee — six or more cups daily — had 0.82 times the risk of developing any form of prostate cancer.

Men who drank the most coffee had a 0.40 times lower risk of developing lethal prostate cancer.

The reduction in risk occurred whether men drank decaffeinated or regular coffee, and does not appear to be due to caffeine.

Coffee drinkers were more likely to smoke and less likely to exercise, lifestyle factors that were taken into account in estimating the risk reduction from the drink.

The link between drinking coffee and lower risk of advanced prostate cancer is biologically plausible, the researchers said. Coffee contains many beneficial compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and affect sex hormone levels, all of which they said may influence prostate cancer.

Three caveats, of course
- They had to adjust for heavy coffee-drinkers' other risk factors, you'd want to know how conservatively that was done
- What other effects does coffee have, that are negative? Anyone know? HBP?
- No statistical significance indicated in the news story.

I thought smoking was a natural way to reduce the size of the prostate. Maybe it's time to start having a smoke with that coffee.

40 oz/day of coffee prophylaxis here, all by 7:30 am. My wife keeps telling me to stop drinking coffee. I tell her, I don't see her in the office at 5:30 am. So, if it does something good, that's nice.

Also long term vetamine E usage according to a Scandinavian study reduces risk. Ten years or more.

The US ran a study that ran for 8 years with no significant reduction.

It seems odd that the Scandinavian study was over a 20 year period, stating it took 10 years of e consumption to help. While the US only ran the study for 8 years????? Could it be that they didn't want to find out????

I have been taking the e for about 15 years, what I have noticed is that I just don't have colds anymore. So one can surmise that the e boosts the immune system.

I wonder if I could write off the the Salvatore Espresso maker as a medical expense....or there is rhyme to my madness.

I have been consuming on the average two healthy cups of mud a day with that machine for 7 plus years.

So I guess a wanker who drinks a lot of coffee will have a real healthy prostate.

Turns out that a drug sometimes taken for hair loss (finasteride) is also shown in at least one clinical trial to reduce the risk of prostate cancer, although it is not approved by the FDA for that purpose. So, we can be hairy, wanky, coffee-swilling guys with small prostates. Cool.

Looks like you may be putting the coffee in the wrong end if it is for fighting cancer......

I'll still be drinking mine, thanks.

For a long time, it was said that some nutrient in tomatoes could contribute to lowering risk of prostate cancer. I've "enjoyed" an enlarged prostate for many years now and nothing I've consumed has made any real difference in my quality of life. Coffee has a diuretic effect and combined with low bladder capacity due to prostate back pressure can make for a lot of trips to the can. But I'll drink 20 oz. of coffee daily, anyway, just to clear the morning fog.

That's true... Also, Smoking can be beneficial in some types of bowel disorders were bleeding is one of the symptoms.
But obviously the risks of smoking far out weigh any benefits.

study found decaff was equally effective

so apparently not the caffeine; last time I checked, over 47 different alkaloids had been found in coffee
