what about when someone says "coming down the pike" wouldn't it be PIPE???

what comes down a pike? unless someone is doing something fishy.
I've heard of a head on a pike, maybe that's what is sliding down.

And i'm sick of hearing "in this economy"

Among building trades unions, "thrown under the bus" will never be abandoned as cliche. It is their main method of accomplishing something. Seriously. No group of organizations is more vicious than building trades unions.

It goes either way anymore. Not everyone lives near a "turnpike" and therefore does not know of the original reference. Some even say "pipeline."
