I have a friend who circumvents the system in this way and seems to be just fine with it. I couldn't bring myself to do it. Just for kicks, let's say you have a $500,000 life insurance policy and fly w/ a denied medical in an LSA on your drivers license and you auger in for some reason. I'm betting the insurance company will tell you to kiss off. |

I was never denied a medical but it was getting harder to get each year because of kidney stones so I just let it go.

Is the C-120 on the LSA list? Last I checked it was too heavy. Also - I like your Aeronca site! I've visited there many times, had no idea it was you! |

I know there are plenty of guys out there without a current medical or BFR, but I won't do that. Flying an old Cub or Champ over Montana ranch land may be acceptable risk for some, but I'm not willing top fly the Bonanza without velid insurance. No insurance company would pay a claim if the pilot was not current. |

Not wise. The FAA does ramp checks, it's not just myth. I've been ramped twice, once in KSLO and the other time at KPDX. Granted I was flying Part 135 both times and this probably gets more scrutiny than regular "plain old" Part 91 GA operations, but I think flying without your ducks in a row is eventually gonna' catch up with you. Playing the odds only works for so long...

WW1 they use to drink brandy to counter the effects of the Castor oil burning and leaking from the engines. Many had to make impromptu landing to let say "relieve them selfs.

I don't think to many pilots flying with out a medical are flying to and fro from many airports were the FAA would be doing ramp checks. The FAA likes to get the big fish they are not wasting time on some older guys flying in for breakfast.

Joe,
Which is your Aeronca site? Reading this stuff makes me want to pick up where I left off in the Champ in '53! Is 75 too old to resume lessons? is there an age limit? Seriously. Thanks Joe!

no age limit. just medically qualified. which isnt too hard. i see lots of fatboy airline pilots (who look like walking cases of type 2 diabetes) and somehow they've managed to keep their class I's.

Yeah, I've flown an airplane or two. ATP, 9000 hours, current and qualified 727 second officer, Fedex. Type rated on the 727 and 747.
In a previous life, I flew 747's for Connie Kalitta as captain. That place, as well as Southern Air, Express One International, American Eagle, and Atlantic Coast Airlines. Please don't accuse me of anything regarding that last airline- I was only with them for two years, and I left that place before I got killed..... I also spent 2100 hours teaching people to fly at FlightSafety Academy in Vero Beach; That was the most rewarding flying I've ever done, and 15 years from now when I retire, I will go back to teaching then. I let my CFI expire, so I'll have to take a check ride- Dammit! N! |

Years ago when I first got in the QB's one of our old farts was a WW1 Spad pilot. He used to tell us stories about "the great war" and you are right about hitting the potty. The castor oil would come in through their lungs and he told us that several times he would barely get the plane on the ground and slowed down when he had to jump out, yank his pants down and let it rip. Evidently the castor oil was a very good laxitive...

I'll agree with that, the 141 was such a GREAT plane... Getting to fly both the 141 and the DC-8, I feel like I got to be part of an era that is slipping into the history books...
Both planes, ESPECIALLY the 8, were TANKS ! Now, coming from the C-5, I simply CAN'T call the 17 'crap'... There are a LOT of C-5 guys out there that were 'raised' on that plane (always in the shadow of the 141) and in my opinion it seems they want their plane to be 'the best in the Air Force'... and YEAH - IT'S BIG !! and can do some pretty cool things for a plane that can carry what it can carry, but the C-5 is an enormous TURD !!! I don't understand right now why they didn't design the C-17 with a faster cruise speed, other than the wing design for high-lift w/ short field t/o & lndg in mind, which it does AMAZINGLY well... I haven't got to that point yet, but I think that LRC is .74 in the 17, don't know what red-line is, but she likes to burn a lot of fuel...
