can i view my laptop's video camera remotely with my iphone?

i adopted a dog. this dog has separation anxiety. we are trying to manage it. we give him a toy with snacks stuffed in it and leave the house with zero fanfare. we have crate trained him. he loves his crate, and will sleep in it. he goes in by himself when he is tired..we shut the door with no fanfare. when we come home, we sometimes hear him barking frantically.

i would love to put a camera on him so we can check his progress offsite. we wonder if he simply sleeps. i can set up a video camera, but i wonder if i can put my camera from my laptop on him, and just watch him with my iphone. am i dreaming?

Yes, obviously the laptop needs to b on and connected to the net.

Here's one solution,

http://www.senstic.com/iphone/aircam/aircam.aspx

There are plenty more including free stuff that you can install on the PC and it will push to a webpage so you can use any browser.

I would think that if you install skype on both this can be done, although I do not have an Iphone to verify that claim. Skype for iphone can be downloaded here.

I have a colleague who has logged into his office computer using an iPad from a plane (Air Canada from LAX) with wifi on-board. I will ask him tomorrow for the software used.

For the iPhone the app Mocha VNC Lite is great and free. Just this morning as I got dressed I logged into one of the computers here and turned on a lamp for the scanner to warm up the bulb. It was ready to go when I got to work.

Problem with Skype is you'll need someone on the home end to "answer" the call.

You could use logmein or a VNC client to do that.

Logmein and VNC are for remote interaction/control of one's computer. You could use it to turn on the remote PC's camera and screen share but there are better solutions specifically tailored to what vash wants to do.

Most home broadband routers have built in capability for wireless security cams. You could easily pick up a few cheap ones and have multi camera views and bypass the PC completely.

Thats similar to the camera system i have at home. I can view all my security cameras around my house from my cell phone. It will also alert me when the cameras are activated.

I've used Team Viewer (TeamViewer - Free Remote Access and Remote Desktop Sharing over the Internet) extensively for over a year. It's basically like Remote Desktop. It's free, and works great, and also available as an iphone app. Leave the host running on your desktop, and you can run the client from any computer (or iphone, etc) in the world.
