OT: Jay Leno's Chrysler Turbine Car

I noticed the number of views for this video on YouTube, and I thought surely a lot of gear heads would be interested in the first and only Turbine Car, if they just knew about it. So here you go...

YouTube - ‪1963 Chrysler Turbine Ultimate @ Jay Lenos Garage‬‏

Hope you enjoy.

When I was digging into some mopar stuff a few years ago , I looked up an ex- Chrysler employee I was directed to by someone. Amongst other things , he was put in charge of overseeing some of these cars that when around the U.S. on promotional tour.

He had many interesting stories about them , including that they would run on just about anything. He said once they did a demo running one on perfume !

He said hard liquor worked well also.

Not only did they tour these cars around the country, but they had a user lease program for ordinary citizens, albeit very, very few. I had an aquaintence in San Antonio Tx who had one. The terms were based on a one year lease, with a monthly reporting requirement to the mfgr. At the end of the lease all cars went back to Chrysler.
It was a really cool vehicle, never had a chance to ride in it though.

Elwood Engel did the design work on the car. Very similar to the early sixty T-birds. He was an ex GM, Ford guy replacing Virgil Exner (Mr Fin). You can clearly see the transition of Mopar cars from fins to refinned lines.

One made it to my small town of Lebanon, OR. Caused quite a stir among the "car guys" of the time. It was leased to a Paymaster (check writing machine co.) rep. Really a nice guy...taking the time to answer questions from the punk kids we must have been....and of course, turning down any invitations to "take it out to airport road"...

With GM's help, Leno has his own "modern" turbine car, and it's kinda fast.

The EcoJet: Jay Leno’s New GM-Outsourced Supercar
Ray Wert
—Yes, that's Jay Leno, comedian and talk show host. Yes, that's Ed Welburn, GM's veep of Global Design. But the silver bullet with the Grateful Dead-looking logo in between them is what I came to see at the Wynn Casino late last night, mere hours before SEMA's official starting gun fires. It's the 650 hp (400 lb.-ft. of torque), bio-diesel monster supercar named the EcoJet. The mid-engined beast, originally sketched by Leno and Ed on the back of a napkin, shares design cues with everything from jet aircraft and Formula One racecars, and even, it would appear, the nose of a Cadillac STS. The Leno-Welburn love child is powered by a Honeywell LT-101 turbine engine running in a modified Corvette Z06 hydroformed aluminum frame with aluminum and magnesium structural and chassis components. The shell's composed of a carbon fiber over Kevlar skin.

The leases were for 3 months, not a year.

There was one in Albuquerque when I was a kid... guy that had it ALWAYS had cars following him around... people pointing... yelling...

Cool video.

They actually made 50 total. My FIL filled out the paperwork to get one, but never heard back from Chrysler. Just saw the exact car at the Peterson, same color and all, maybe J's.
