Help with San Diego Restaurants....
In need some local insight for a nice dinner for my wife's B-day while on vacation in August. I will be downtown and it will be a wed night so anything within 10 miles is fine. I was thinking Gaslight but a beach spot woutl be nice as well (what about Coronado?)
The thing is we are on a family trip so the 3 kids (7, 12, 14) will be with us. Interested in something nice but no too stuffy for the kids but definitely not a regular family spot as the kids will be ok eating more than burgers, chicken fingers etc. Asian and or seafood is good and steak places are out. any thoughts??

Peohe's in Coronado gives one a wonderful view of Downtown.
Edgewater grill is nice. Max's on 5th for steak. (It might be Georges now) Georges on the Cove in La Jolla is also quite nice. Way Up North, the Charthouse

If you want good mexican food in Old Town go to cafe coyote. Good food and margaritas.

I'd second Peohe's...can take a water taxi from downtown and it drops you at Peohe's. Wx will be warm on the water that time. Have fun!

If you like real Sichuan food, Spicey City on Convoy St. is excellent, but not fancy at all.

Seaport Village. Several decent ones there.

Bali Ha'i on shelter island. I don't think there's a better view of the city and bay. It's Polynesian/infusion style. Oh, and they make a "no juice" Mai Tai. Take a cab :^)

Well a couple of my favorites are:
- Inn and Out Burger.... search to see which is closest to where you are staying - East Buffet on Miramar Road near the North Gate of MCAS Miramar and if it is open just down the street is the Marine Aircraft Museum (FREE!). They have great seafood selection! |

thanks all. I haven't seen the Seaport while searching but had seen Peohe's on the Chart House site.
In/Out was definitely on the list at least a few times while in CA. What about Prado and or Bluepoint from the Cohn group? Blue Point | Cohn Restaurant Group | 565 5th Avenue, 92101

I personally won't step foot in a Chart House but ymmv. Been treated poorly at more than one location (and no, it wasn't me - I seem to have no problem at any of the other 100 or so restaurants I've been to in LA/SD/SF).
My local knowledge is dated wrt SD. Seaport Village was kind of a tourist area back in the day, but then again you're a tourist . In/Out is more of an LA thing imho. You're better off in SD doing any number of Mexican food shacks, or a place like El Indio. |

If you want REAL cal-mex food then you have to go to Chuey's in National City. You will have to check the times they are open as they used to close early. That is where Ronald Reagan used to eat when he came to the S.D. area running for president. It is not quite the same since they moved out of the WW2 corrugated tin hut years ago but it is still pretty fair.

Obviously you were in the Navy a few years ago.....All the bars have been torn down and replaced with.......not real sure with what actually?! But Chuey's is in the chicano park area and they are okay with white folks as long as the sun is out!

And no, I'm not bringing anyone, including myself to Chicano Park, Nasty City, Chula Juana or any points South of downtown! ![]()

George's and the Prado are both very nice and very good, but not the kid friendliest spots, but if they are well behaved, you will be fine. Blue Water Seafood on India St has great fresh fish, but has gotten crowded after being featured on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives (thanks Guy!) Parkhouse Eatery is great, on Tuesday nights they have a Pre Fixe that is amazing, try the Lobster Ravioli. Taka, Sushi Ota or Ono Sushi are the places to go for sushi. I would avoid Old Town and Seaport Village unless you want a touristy place. Take Nostatic's advice, there are so many amazing taquerias in San Diego, try a few different ones. El Agave is an upscale Mexican place where I have had many amazing meals. Tapanade in La Jolla is an excellent French place also that has a wonderful wine pairing meal for you and the missus. There are many wonderful dining options in your area, I am in Uptown, the highlighted ones are close to Downtown. You can also go to Pt Loma Seafood pick up some food, picnic on Shelter Island and watch the boats go by with a great view of Downtown.

Alfonso's in La Jolla is a very nice Mexican restaurant with a great view, not expensive but nice with homemade flan.
