Oregon Motor Vehicle Emissions

Do they do smog checks in Oregon like they do in California?

Only in certain areas...I know Portland area is smog check. No smog check in my county.

So, depends on where you move to.

C'mon up...seems like half of California already has.

They do 'em in Multnomah County, where Portland is, and I think they have to do 'em in Washington County, where about half the population lives. (Intel, Nike, )

You only have to get smogged every other year.

Did a search. So far, seems to be only the Portland area and the Rouge Valley..(Medford area).

Yes, they do smog checks, but they use the OBD2 interface instead of the roller/sniffer test on cars newer than 1996 I believe..

On my backdated 88 Carrera they sniffed the tailpipe. Its a rolling 20 year exemption so that car now is exempt.

My Carrera and Vanagon get smogged in Portland. They stick a sniffer in the tailpipe and wave me on. Don't bother to open the engine lid. Last time, the tech chatted with me about Subie-powered Vanagons and my Ford-powered one.

I personally think the local smog check system is ideal. They do make sure the car is not a excessive polluter, but don't bother themselves about how you achieve that.

Reason I ask is I am likely buying a 2004 car up in Portland, and am wondering if they check. it is stock, and a 50 state car, so it should be no problem, but I plan to put a clause in contract for sale that should it fail to pass California emmisions, the deal is void.

What seller (other than a Californian where it's the law) is going to sign that?

Re: your clause. I understand why you put it in there. But who handles the shipping if the deal falls through b/c the car fails smog in CA? I could see that being a deal-killer issue for the seller. Might as well sell locally for less potential headache. You might be an upstanding and honest guy, but he doesn't know that.

At the same time, if the car is stock, a 2004 model, and has been passing smog in PDX, it'll pass in CA, too.

Must be an attorney thing (not bashing...just sayin').

I was selling 3 yr. old solar panels on Craigslist and was contacted by a local attorney who wanted them for his home. He insisted on a warranty! Sorry, no deal...

He seems to be a pretty reasonable guy, I have not heard back from him about it. It has been passing smog up there, as it is registered where they test. I probably will not make a big deal about it, he did not seem concerned at all about it passing.

Thank you John, but have already gotten it scoped out.

Portland metro and Jackson County (Medford where we live) both emissions test.

We sold a Jeep to a fellow in CA. We had put headers on it and had to provide the CARB paperwork for him. It passed emisisons, but the CARB paperwork was required to be legal. Gibson headers emailed us the paperwork - guy had no problem after that.

If it passes in Portland (or Medford), it will pass in CA as long as it has no modifications. This is pertaining to newer vehicles. In Oregon, we only emissions test for 20 years. After that, no more testing so most of us feel free to modify if you know what I mean.

I am hip Angela, that is the sort of feedback I was lookng for. They just scan for codes on newer cars, as long as there are no codes, should be no problem
