Interesting MotoGP Video clip

For those of you that don't ordinarily watch MotoGP, here's a video clip of Casey Stoner running through a fairly tight left hand corner, shot at 1000 frames per second, so that you can see more detail of what is actually happening than you usually can when watching it in real time.

Note that he has some oversteer prior to the apex. Also, note the almost imperceptable steering corrections to stop the back end from coming around just past the apex. Also not that after he gets past the apex, he quickly stands the bike up a little bit, to get onto a fatter part of the tire to begin accelerating out of the corner. He's not spinning the tire hard but he is leaving rubber on the track.

Stoner is a whiny biotch, but that guy can ride a bike like no other. He has amazing skillz. Great sequence.

And how big is the contact patch?

Less than 3 square inches?

The area of the contact patch varies with load, tire pressure, etc. I'd guess it's around double that, give or take, maybe a little more.

Understood. Corners more; straights less. But overall very little.

Agreed, I usually root for Rossi to beat Stoner.

But how about that rookie kamikazi-tard, Simoncelli?
He's as bad as his hair-do.

How many crashes will he have to cause and how many riders will he have to injure before they give the clown the boot?
I guess every racing org. needs a Hamilton.

He hasn't injured any riders. Humpty Dumpty (Pedrosa) made a decision to not let off once SuperSic was past, and rode ride into his back tire, making him fall down. Simoncelli is an amazing rider, and once he stops making mistakes will be a front-runner. Remember, Stoner couldn't stay on his bike the first couple years. Lorenzo also had the same issue.

That's how you saw it?
I'd say there are many who disagree including the officials who gave simoncelli a drive trough penalty for an unsafe maneuver.

Simoncelli/Pedrosa crash sequence - Motorcycle racing news: Moto GP - Visordown

Quote:
WITH all the eyes on his overtly aggressive riding style Marco Simoncelli did not attempt to shy away from his critics and ride cautiously at Le Mans, instead the Italian collided with Dani Pedrosa in a controversial crash.

In a walkthrough of the crash, Simoncelli passed Pedrosa and ran slightly wide coming onto the back straight, the Spaniard got a better drive out of the corner and edged ahead. Marco then outbraked the Repsol Honda of Pedrosa into the left kink, cutting across the front of Dani from the outside, the latter had nowhere to go and hit the side of Simoncelli and crashed.

With Pedrosa leaving the gravel-trap nursing his right shoulder, Simoncelli would regain composure and rejoin the track, continuing in second. What followed was the decision from Race Direction to penalise Marco with a ride-through penalty for an 'illegal passing manoeuvre'.

After overcoming the agony of the injury to his left shoulder and a glimpse of hope for the season, Pedrosa was diagnosed with a broken right shoulder at the circuit medical centre. Commenting post-race Pedrosa said: "I was having a good race, the goal was to ensure another podium and I had it in my grasp. But it counts for nothing. Simoncelli overtook me, I passed him back and I had the better line, he just came into me releasing the brakes and I could do nothing.

"I leave here with a broken collarbone and he with a ride through penalty, good for him! Yet again I come out worse off. We only just recovered from the nightmare of the last operation and now I’m hurt again. It is very unfair, I don’t deserve it" concluded Dani.

Simoncelli was more fortunate, with the gap that the front-runners had built up ahead of the rest he was able to return to the track in seventh position, quickly working his way to fifth at the flag in the closing stages of the race. He said: “I am unhappy about what happened, because a result that was within my reach was denied and above all because of the fact that Pedrosa is hurt."

The Italian would describe the crash from his point of view, "In my opinion the incident went like this: Pedrosa was having a bit of difficulty –I had pulled alongside him and passed him on the previous three laps. When he passed me back I was not intentionally trying to resist, and my telemetry shows that I got on the brakes at the same point as on previous laps.

"I think that he had hit the brakes well before the corner, and I found myself on the outside of him and in front on the entry to the corner. I didn’t want to back off, so I left him with a metre between myself and the kerb in order to go in. I saw that it was tight, so I tried to adjust my position. That was when he touched my back wheel and went down."

The Gresini rider continued, "I repeat that I am unhappy about it, and I want to avoid any controversy regarding penalisation, but I believe that my ride through was a result of all the talk over the past few days."

Marco Simoncelli is eager to get this weekend’s Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya underway following the previous round’s events at Le Mans, and the Italian says he has had plenty of time to reflect on the French GP.

Simoncelli was given a Ride Through penalty for a move on Dani Pedrosa which resulted in a crash and broken collarbone for the Spaniard, and Simoncelli will meet with Race Direction this weekend to further discuss the incident.

“I have had time over the two-week break to think about the race at Le Mans,” said Simoncelli as he prepares to race at a track at which he has previously tasted victory in the 250cc class. “I am still disappointed with what happened to Dani and I hope that he has recovered from his injury in time for this weekend. I am also disappointed because Honda were unable to celebrate having four bikes in the top four positions at the French Grand Prix.”

“Overall on reflection I have realized where I have gone wrong and in the future I will try at certain times to evaluate the situation better and be a little more cautious.
I know that I'm probably not going to get a standing ovation at Barcelona but I hope that if I am criticized it is done in a civilized manner and not in the way that has happened in other sports in the past. In any case I just want to put the controversy behind me and get out there on my bike and start working towards a race that I am sure the team and I have the potential to do well in.”
