ok, I actually changed my response to accommodate sheet goods - like plywood, which they make here

not sure I'd count mdf as a wood product (!); maybe a glue product

The NEO (New Engine Option) for Airbus's narrowbody A320 family that is going to kick Boeing's butt in sales is made by Pratt and Whitney.

MDF is 90+% wood
We have a hard time even getting the wood residuals we need to fill orders. Even the saw dust I'd going over seas!

Troy - I will admit to being blinded by my hatred for mdf (except in speaker cabinets).

There are many high-end bicycle frames still made in the US. Far fewer bicycle components are made here, but I'm proud to say that I work for a company that still does all of it's manufacturing right here in Northern California:

Paul Component Engineering

Cool story: A while ago the owner of the company did a radio interview, and at one point the interviewer asked if him if he had ever considered having his parts made overseas. Paul (the owner) actually got a little pissed off at the question. His reply: "NO! I MAKE STUFF! THAT'S WHAT I DO!" He went on to say what a great crew he had and that he was proud that he has been competitively manufacturing parts here for over 20 years, while most of his competitors have gone overseas.

It was awesome to hear, and I was/am pretty proud to work for the man.

Be aware with what's going on now that if it says "Made in Canada" or "Made in USA" doesn't necessarily mean it is:

i.e. a jacket is made in China less a zipper. jacket shipped to Canada. Zipper sewn on and packaged. If the total costs for the jacket having a zipper sewn on/packaging is >50% (which it will be) the mfg. is allowed to label as "MADE IN CANADA". USA is probably doing something similar.

We really should stop buying stuff from China because we're really screwing ourselves. China is now pushing our good ole' American car manufacturers to build and sell more compact cars in China and they have some clause about releasing the IP to China in a few years (terrible!). Pretty sure they did this with MIG and China is now using the technology to build their own warplanes.

Thanks for the link. Your company has some really cool stuff...

I especially like your drop outs.

I was at an industry conference in May. One of the guest speakers, an economist, said something like, "we have everything in place for a strong recovery; we have the manufacturing capability, talented and skilled workforce, the resources, but government stands in the way." I thought that was pretty telling, at least from a manufacturer's perspective

Great stuff, pretty sure another member here also works there. On my bike, the wheels, stem, bars, crank & front sprocket are built in the good old USA..

My company manufactures toothpaste here in NJ. But FDA rules state that since the main ingredient is made in England, the product label must state" made in England". Manufactured in NJ but labeled according to the source of the main ingredient.

I too shop at NAPA and mistakenly let them sell me some cheap chinese rotors for a GM truck.

I took them back and had them order the "real" ones, made with quality steel.

You get what you are willing to pay for... but you have to actually check!
