Prem gas now $.40 more than regular?!

Here in SW Ohio, Premium gas is now .40 higher than regular, vs. the .20 that it was not too long ago. WTF? Did they jack it up everywhere in the country like this?

Other than greed/profit/margin, what else could be driving it up so much?

Agreed - about the $.20 higher years ago - Now, the difference is bigger than $.40 in Chicago.

I'll give yopu the same BS that I get when I ask about diesel prices.....it's either a refinery down for maintenance, or it's the new "Winter blend". It sounds like greed to me !

In Chicagoland (and SE Wisconsin) I have seen $.80- .$90 more for premium.

It's $.65 higher in Houston vs about $.30 higher out in small towns in the middle of the state.

I could understand the difference when it was $4/ gal but now it's a rip off. Time to call the state attorney general. They seem to like things like this to fight in Texas.

Wow, suppose I shouldn't be complaining about $0.30 difference in Western NY, but it won't stay that low for long. My guess was demand driving the price delta.

I just saw the first sign advertising sub-$2.00 gas that I've seen here in SW Ohio in a long time. Prices have been changing so much I imagine the price discrepancy is due to supply.

I was always used to $0.20 deltas between 87 and 91, though I don't think that's been very typical for a while now. I, too, noticed a very large delta the last time I filled up my SC (which requires 91) - I don't remember what it was, but it was a lot more than $0.40. Just gotta suck it up!

There is very, very little money in selling gas itself, particularly the 87 that most people use. Gas stations make their money off of everything else, but there probably is more margin in higher-octane gas than in 87.

I'm also in AZ...and pretty much everywhere I see it's the .40 delta. Maybe Phoenix is different. Not too long ago, it was a ten cent jump between octanes; now everywhere I've seen in Arizona is a 20 cent jump between octanes. Annoying, I guess, but overall gas is cheaper than what we've been seeing, so I'm not complaining. I can fill up with premium the past few months for a lot less than what 87 was going for a year ago.

That's a joke. Paxton or Abbott doing anything to piss off the oil companies. It does seem odd how high the spread has gotten. I just checked and my closest Costco shows a 40 cent spread.

My 2006 lexus GS430 calls for premium. About three years ago I switched to 87. With modern cars that have knock sensors that pull timing when detonation is detected, I have no concerns. It's not like my throttle ever sees more than 1/4 or 1/3 in this car any way. I think most cars can get away with 87 unless they see full throttle situations and need that last 10% of HP.
