I'm inclined to believe its profit-padding more than anything else. Same situation - the Mercedes "requires" premium but I routinely run regular. It makes a little difference if I stomp on it (not quite as much oomph- the computer detects and compensates).
It's "whatever the market will bear". I just choose to not bear any more than I need to. I think Exxon-Mobil, BP, Shell, Tesoro and all the rest are making plenty without my handing over any more to them voluntarily. |

Here in metro ATL, mid-grade usually costs $.20 more than regular and premium another $.20 more -so it seems normal to me. Just within the past few days, some stations around here have regular for $1.99. Cheapest I've seen in years.....

Premium no ethanol is at least 1.00 more! They know you need it and can get away with gouging.

It's a 1980, but it requires premium because it runs a Megasquirt system that was tuned on 91. I've run a tank or two of 89 in the car and that seemed OK but pinging isn't the easiest to hear on these and I'd rather not risk an expensive engine for the sake of somewhat cheaper gas.

Premium (93) at costco was $2.419
So $0.84 less per gallon than mobil. Just driving the extra 15 miles round trip and buying Three gallons is the break even for the 911! Three gallons barely wets the bottom of the tank. ![]() |

In my area, I've seen premium between .60 and .80 above the price of regular. Yesterday, it was 2.69 for premium, 2.05 for regular at the Exxon station I filled up at.
