And people complain of how high oil companies gouge gas prices, and then go buy an Apple product?

Trying to find 15W50 synthetic oil makes me totally forget about the price of everything else.

Our "less capitalistic" portion of the population (pre)tends to like small businesses, but fevorishly hates large evil corporations.
Yet for some strange they haven't completely turned on Apple yet.
I've seen occasional subtle signs of resentment and revolt, but they haven't bitten the hand that feeds them. yet.
I figure it's only a matter of time.

Microsoft was the same way; I predict the same will happen to Google.

Once a company gets to a certain size, they tend to do things that are perceived (without judgment) as evil.

Everyone loves David, everyone hates Goliath. A lot of Davids turn into Goliaths.

People don't have to buy Apple products to live, with gas, it's a little different.

Apple's methods and controls are FAR more limiting and draconian than Microsoft's ever were. They do have great designs though - and the stuff works so well one almost doesn't care. Ends justify the means, for 99% of the people out there.

They are only as limiting as ones skill set.

The casual user is hand held and protected from making mistakes that can have negative results.

The more experienced user can work without things getting in the way.

The power user can get under the shell and do pretty much anything they want or need.

Have the iPhone, iPod, iPad and MacBook. Great products but I refuse to put one of those decals on my car. But since I drive a Subaru Outback, it would go great with the rainbow flag and "Obama/Biden in '08" sticker.

Stomach monkey is absolutely correct.

And that is why the average user gets to hate apple at some point.

Cause they see some cool thing that is easy to do on a driod/pc, and they wanna do it.

But its something that you need to be a skilled/power user to do.

And they don't have the skill, so they can't. And it drives them freaking bonkers when they find out that its not the greatest, as they have been told time and time again it is...

Not so sure about this. Apple makes a product that people are seriously enthusiastic about and are happy to pay a premium for. Because they work better and the quality and design is superb.

Like Porsche. Or Leica.

I am happy that there are still companies like this around in today's disposable world.

I've become a lot less enthusiastic about Apple over the past few years. The hardware is great and basic computing is still a lot simpler. The basic interface is still much more elegant, but Apple has been piling on too many bells and whistles. The software tries to do too much thinking for you. It makes tasks automatic in ways that are counter intuitive and harder to understand than just doing them manually.
iPhoto is a good example. It's an awful product that Apple sets as the default in new machines. My friend lost all her photos every time she plugged her camera into her Mac. They weren't destroyed, just automatically put where the geniuses at Apple decided they should be stored, and only accessible in a way the geniuses at Apple decided they should be accessed.
She was in a hysterics until I got iPhoto turned off and got the photos put into folders she could access from Photoshop. The machines should come with no defaults set and ask you what programs you want to use, not come set up ready to work the way Apple engineers think you should work.
The problem with software is you never get the pleasure of ripping it out of the machine, throwing it on the bench, and beating it with a hammer.

Just wait. They will eventually step on their dick and piss off a good chunk of the user base, and (eventually) a competitor(s) will arrive with the same functionality for a fraction of the price.

It will be interesting to see what happens when Jobs kicks the bucket.

They make a good product, but it can indeed be very frustrating to use at times. The wife & I have iPhones had she had a iPad. She loves to download and read the free books from the library and is finally starting to understand the real power and utility of Google at your fingertips.

She loves it so much she just ordered an iPad for her mother.

I just recently bought an iPhone after my Blackberry (I've used them since they first came out) went sneakers up. There are two reasons I switched:

- I could stay with Verizon, which works very well in my little corner of the world, and I think is a big reason for the earnings jump. I know at least 5 other folks that waited for Verizon access.

- My kids love their Apple stuff and, why not?

I've only had it a week and I very pleased with it. The only thing I miss is the BB keyboard...my fingers continually hit the letter next to the one I want on the touch keyboard. I much prefer the HSI for email, web, etc.

Is there a way to make the touch keyboard larger?

I have large hands...it is a bit annoying but I'll adapt. I find using a pencil, the erasure end, works much better.

Otherwise, I'm learning a lot.

How is that a bad thing?
