question for you bimmer guys

I did a job for a customer the other day (old lady) and there was a 1984 323i sitting in a field uncovered it had a young tree growing next to it almost against passenger door...so i figured it had been sitting for several years
i asked her about it and she said it belonged to her daughter and said i could go out and check it out and she confirmed that it had been then for three yrs or so(she was about 80 so not sure if 3 yrs is the truth)

I looked over the car pretty well it is an 84 with 84k miles according to odm
sense it is not covered the paint is real bad (red) the dash is cracked to hell
the exhaust is rusted out..dont see much obvious rust on body accept 1 spot on rear quarter

I asked if she thought her daughter would sell and she said maybe
old lady called me yesterday and said make her an offer

i tried looking these cars up on line and see them goin for under 10g in good condition
i told her i would be willing to pay a couple hundred do to the amount of money it would take to sort it out

she called me today and said her daughter was looking for more like 2500 cause she said this is a special car one of 500 made...i know nothin bout bmw was just lookin for somethin cheap and fun that i could eventually play around with, together with my son

anybody know if this could be a rare car? I kinda find it hard to believe...I mean why would they leave such a rare car outside for the weather to destroy

just curious i had no intention of payin any more then 500...i also dont know why it was parked in the first place

84 323i doesn't sound right. Maybe an 83 gray market 323i e21. That's pretty rare, but in that shape it's worth nothing.

The US E30's in 1984 had kinda dog motors, I think it was the 318i and the 325e.

323i would be a euro car, small bumpers and a revvy motor.

Cool car, desireable, but sadly not collectable in that condition.

They should be thanking you to tow it out of there. It will be a money pit.

If you have the VIN you can punch it in here and see what it says. That should tell you what you need to know.

For a US sold car there is no such thing as an '84 323i in the E30 chassis, this rare engine was available ONLY in Europe.

The E21 chassis was made from 1975 to 1983 only in Europe had the VERY desirable 323i, some were gray market imports to the U.S and very much sough after in this country. You can tell a 323i in the E21 chassis as it had two exhaust tips flanking the left and right of the rear of the car...like the picture below:

In the U.S we only had the lethargic 320i four cylinder in the E21 Chassis as an engine choice

In the U.S we only had the 318i and 325i four cylinder in the E21 Chassis as an engine choice (when the E30 was launched).

Sounds like the car is in fact an early E30.

Had to post this pic...as I love the E21 chassis

Not worth much more than $500. Look elsewhere.

It's a euro version. But who cares. I might take it for free and play with it once i a while, but wait a min. I don't have time for that. I rather spend time on my 911. She is out of her mind.

If she thought it was a special "1 of 500", why did she let it sit in a field to rot..? I hate seeing that kind of thing.

Let it die. It will end up trying to kill you if you ever get it running.

Horrible handling car.

You can drop $25K into it and have a very nice $10K car at the end.

I have a '84 323i that I paid $1300 for. She's out of her mind if she thinks it's worth $2500 in that condition.

The gray market 323s are better looking and faster than the US version.

Agreed. From my quick searches anything close to what SoCal pictured is easily $5K and way up. Where do folks recommend shopping (online) for older BMWs?

I did get a 'deal' and I've put a couple of bucks into it since I bought it. The upholstery was pretty rough so that was $1100 right off the bat.
The other stuff like wheels, Konis, spoilers etc... were just for fun.
