Got a transmission in the mail.

Walking past the back door I see a delivery driver wrestling a good size cardboard box onto the ground.

He brings it in, the box is beat to **** with rips and tears in it.

It's from Canada and addressed to one of our employees. Problem is he's in our UK office.

As i'm standing there looking at it I start smelling tranny fluid. Reach thru one of the large holes and yup, that's an output shaft i feel.

Send and instant message to the guy asking him "what's up with this?"

He was going to have the mail room forward along to him in the UK.

Tell him it's packed pretty poorly and unless he crates or skids it he should not expect it to show up in one piece.

What do you guys think? Ship a tranny in nothing but an unpadded cardboard box or skid it?

your company mail system will allow that?

That's amazing.

Repack it but charge him.

Nah, he's paying for it. He's the MD of our UK office. I suspect it was too difficult to get from Canada to the UK direct so it stopped here first. Maybe it's a VAT issue.

Greyhound is cheapest if the guy on the other end will pick up at their stn. - they will take it in a sealed Rubbermaid tub

otherwise, I'd put it on a pad

I'd make sure he knew how his transmission was packed and let him make the decision.

But if it was mine or I was sending a trans to someone... I would build a wooden crate complete with supports on the inside with the trans properly secured with straps and brackets.

I vote you cut away the box, and wrap the whole thing up real well in brown paper and packing tape. Then stencil "Premium Smoked Ham" on the side, and send it on its way.
