I might catch some flak for this but.... anyone know of a Volvo 122 Wagon for sale?

Several months ago, I began a search for a BMW 2002. Time and finances being what they were, it didn't pan out. I looked at several cars, but didn't find anything that worked for me.

I took some time off from that and took a look around. I have a wife, 3 kids and a dog. We have a minivan, but a wagon would be a good second family car. The 122 Wagon has caught my attention, and I've been looking for a few months now.

Something like this:

I am looking for a project, so nothing too nice

Thanks!

I'm not too sure that's a Volvo; looks like it says something else across the nose there.

Isn't that a Volvo in the background, behind the truck? Yours?

They come up fairly regularly on CL and eBay if you keep your eyes open. They are indestructible in general and can last a million miles w/ good upkeep but they drive like a tractor compared to a modern car. Still, they have their charms. A pretty good one was on eBay a couple weeks ago, might still be able to find it and at least see what the bids were if you search "completed items" after you key in 122s.

That would be an 1800ES which is a popular car w/ Volvo people/collectors. I prefer the regular 1800 coupe shape myself.

i don't know if they came as a wagon but there was also a volvo 123gt that was a hotter cousin of the 122. they are pretty rare but they are out there if you look hard enough.

You can find these cheap. I've always been a sucker for Volvo wagons.

I've been watching ebay and CL, but figured I'd throw it out here.

So here's the answer to some of those questions, in no particular order:

1) I am looking for a 122 Wagon (or Estate as they are called) not an 1800 ES. The 1800 is a fine car, but too small for my purposes.

2) None of the cars pictured with the green wagon, nor the green wagon, are mine.

c) 123GTs were not "officially" imported into North America. There were some assembled in Canadia. 123GTs were coupes only, but most of the bits are the same across all of the 122 models and can be retro-fitted.

d) While I appreciate modern cars, I don't want one. I prefer older cars that I can easily maintain myself.

v) I am looking for a project, and my budget is about $2k for the car. The one on ebay that sold last week was pretty nice, and probably too nice for what I have planned. I'd hate to take a car that's more of a collectible, and transform it into something other than stock original.

Thanks for your help. Please keep an eye out!

Have you looked for any Volvo lover websites? I'm sure there'd be classified ads.

Cool car.

Since you mentioned wife and kids, wanted to you be aware of the general crash-worthiness of older cars versus those with 2nd gen airbags, etc. There's a great video showing a Volvo 740 wagon (1990's vintage) against a modern Renault. The Volvo is bigger, heavier and regarded as a tank. In a 40mph offset head-on, the Volvo suffered much more than the Renault. Driver had the dash into his legs, pax compartment was compromised, etc.

Old cars are great. But if you are going to drive them routinely in the same city as Expeditions, et al, something to think about.

Why would you catch flak? Old Volvos are generally accepted by the real "car guy" types.

Personally, I love old Volvos. Absolutely indestructible, and incredibly charming.

good luck
both the 1800 and 122 are priced as classics
if unrusted and not trashed
both are worth a few times your 2000
but you never know
you may find a 356 for cheap too

Actually, I kind of like the "wagon" partially seen in the background.

I might catch flak because I posted here for help finding a 2002 and changed my mind. I have a habit of doing that and it's a little problem sometimes. That's all.

I agree, they are quite charming.

Ha, that pic is my desktop image

I looked around for one for a few months before i stumbled across a deal I couldn't pass up on a 245 (240 wagon). Good luck with your search.

I'm sure you already know but turbobricks.com is about the most similar to pelican there is for Volvos, but it is 240/740 content heavy.

More money for this Volvo but, having a family myself, I'm tempted.
