When I was a kid, we rode dirt bikes with no helmets on neighbor's properties... If we hurt ourselves, it was our fault, not the property owner's. If we slipped on an icy sidewalk, it was our fault not the property owner's fault. If we burned our mouths by chugging a big gulp of hot cocoa from a store, it was our fault. If we ran into a tree while skiing, it was our fault not the ski resorts.

Was raised on a farm. The only boy of 5 kids. Dad had a full-time job. Guess who did their share? Happiest day of my life was when I was 15 and got a job working 7 days a week (even during school year) at a service station. No work on the farm, no church!

Whichever one has no job I would guess. Dudes with jobs can't give today's women the attention they feel they deserve.

Erm, isn't it LACK of regulation over the legal "industry" that's led to ambulance chasing? That's why so many people are clamouring for tort reform.

I'm a bit on the fence about the safety differences between my generation (tail end of Gen-X/very beginning of Gen-Y, born in 1975) and my kids' generation. Yeah, we used to ride our bikes without helmets (or in my case skateboard, with no helmet or pads) and mom and dad used to toss us in the back of the car to drive to Florida with no seatbelts and a pile of games, and we all turned out fine.

But part of that is because the kids that didn't turn out fine aren't here to tell their stories. Infant/child deaths and injuries in car crashes have dropped significantly over the last few decades, due to improved safety features, and the increased age, height and weight limits for no child/booster seats. Closed head injuries from bicycling, etc are way down due to the increased use of helmets. So those regulations are indeed making a difference. A huge difference.

We're considering driving to Florida this winter, rather than flying. We're trying to come up with ways of keeping our kids happy over the 22-hour drive. Used to be you toss them in the back with games, books, play-doh, snacks, whatever, and they were happy. But nowadays there are 10x as many cars on the road, which means 10x as many drunks, kids texting, etc etc and I'm just not comfortable with my kids in the back of the minivan playing while driving 60mph. It's a different world than it was when I was a kid.

As a side note, I brought my 14 year old niece and her girlfriend down to our farm last summer for a vacation. We were in our truck, and the girls sat side by side. They didn't say a word the entire trip down, but, they communicated by texting each other. The world as we know it....

Well that way they can say how goofy you are without having you hear and without making face to face contact. ;)

On a side note, texting seems so tedious to me. So much quicker to call than type on a little phone keypad. There are times when you want silent communication, though.

Then they use that thing on the shoulders called a brain, and invent a secret language between themselves. It takes creativity, but the youth can do that sort of thing so I've heard.

No adult has taught them pig latin or a different language. They don't know it exists. And they don't need to, because they're already independant and ready for the real world with their trusty little electronic gizmo.

I am pretty much disgusted with all of the above. I choose to wear a helmet when I ride a motorcycle, but I HATE the idea that not wearing one could get me a ticket in some states. While some legislation is needed in society, IMO we have gone too far with it.... This country was great because of it's freedom..... Ever increasing legislation is making freedom a thing of the past.... I don't like it one bit. :mad:

I think there is many things at work here, the focus of the education system, the consumer brainwashing, the cost of replacement parts (ie. printer ink cartridges), (in REAL terms) what many new complex items cost today vs. in the past (way cheaper), and finally the shear complexity of many of the objects found in many peoples homes. Not too long ago everything in a normal household was repairable....and made economic sense to do so. I think once people began accepting the fact that will throw out their four year old TV or five year old computer it became a habit and an approach to everything.....throw away cars anyone? Cheers

I know construction guys who will do any and every thing (electrical, plumbing, roofing, etc.) except floor-laying. Pay the floor layer guys to do it. Particularly vinyl.

My GF heats with wood, so I've been using a chain saw and splitting mall. Quite frankly, I just LOVE the work. Especially the splitting. It wouldn't be nearly as much fun if I were using a gas-powered splitter.

Wellll.... after over 20 years of splitting our wood with a maul, a friend gave me one to try out...I have to say I always thought of it as "cheating"... but now I'm a convert, what can I say? Gnarly maple, fir or arbutus....no problem, half an hour beating on a gnarly round is a thing of the past....I love splitters.

I make my own beer and ammo, but you guys make me look pathetic!

I haven't been at it long. Splitters are the way to go, I know. But for now, it's fun. Just firs and a few pines. A bunch of Alder, which practically explodes apart when you stare at it. Sometimes I just raise the mall and let gravity do it.

GF makes beer and wine. She has nine carboys. Five are full now. I do the cutting and splitting. It's a symbiotic relationship.

You failed to mention who does the drinking? Once you go beyond a single carboy you officially become a micro-brewing operation. As such, you are required to begin offering your delicious makings to us, on the PP board (for sale or barter of course).

Our new house has a little 8 x 8 dungeon which while not cellar temperature (too hot in FL) is enough of a difference where if I added cooling, the electric bill would be reasonable. So we can't wait to get back into making beer again. In fact the first thing we are going to do is buy a carboy.

This I find interesting because I am currently in the middle of a bathroom remodel and there's no way I would do the plumbing or electrical myself. I consider these to be critical components and I really want a licensed professional doing the work so it passes inspection. Now I have been hiring the workers myself and skipping the general contractor and his 15% markup on the job but I feel my money would be better spent on someone who really knows what they are doing rather than my blundering through the job.

Oil changes on the other hand, are something I'll always do myself. there is no way I'll let a clown at Jiffylube touch my cars! On that note, check out this video and perhaps you'll think twice about letting them touch your cars too!

Hehe. The Jiffy Lube featured was right around the corner from me. I wondered why they had gone out of business. I think they (another location) messed with my brakes. Got lazy on the Toyota oil change and brought it to them. Brakes were fine going in. Shortly after I left, strange noises started to show up.
