I stuck a toe in this pond this weekend. The Internet makes this entirely too easy and being fresh out of rolling stock makes it dangerous to the wallet. If I can pass on brass I may not need to hit the lotto.

That is looking pretty cool. Love those bridges. Your son is lucky to have a dad like you.

That is cool. I don't have the dexterity nor the eyesight to deal with N scale.

My job is crushing right now, but I still make some progress every few months.
Panorama of my little HO layout. Front section is actually straight, photo distorts it. 2 outer mainlines run great, still finishing 3rd inner switching loop. I run Soo Line stock, mostly older Athearn blue box. ![]() |

Another photo of my models. My N scale layout is modular and portable so I like to set parts of it up outside to take photos under natural light.

When the wife is away, the kitchen table will become a temporary layout.

Got my first brass engine today off ebay.
It's a 1968 4-8-4 c&o built by olympia from japan. My god- what a difference from the plastic engines (rivarossi) I have. It is so much better. I am absolutely amazed at the craftsmanship on this thing and that it was essentially soldered from scratch. Evidently, this brand of engine doesn't go for much money as some of the other brass makers because it isn't as dimensionally accurate, or as smooth running other makers, but this one is still a huge step up from what I was used to. I added some weight and it comes in at around two pounds, and can pull a 14 car consist with ease, just like the real 4-8-4 greenbriers. Before, I would have to double head two engines to get the same result. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Time to retire the closet layout.
Moving on to bigger and better. The closet layout was 7x15 and you needed to get on a ladder to see anything. No stress of high $ trains falling to their death. 8x22 feet on new layout, you can see it, and no 7 foot drops off the tracks! This should be big enough to run full length passenger consists 13-14 feet long, and should get the engines off the kitchen table. |

That looks like fun! Takes a lot of space, that's for sure. There's a Model RR club here in PDX, they bought an old house and filled the first floor and basement with a great layout. They open it up to the public at Christmas time.
You know who else likes Model RR's? Neil Young. He bought Lionel when they were close to going tits-up! Here's a great song he wrote that'll get your toes tapping. Love the scratchy guitar mimicking the sound of the wheels! (the rhythm of the rails!)
