I hope he rots in jail forever. But I suspect this isn't over yet. He's skated a few times before. He has an almost Joseph Smith-like knack for getting himself out of tight spots.

(CBS/AP) Polygamist leader Warren Jeffs was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday for sexually assaulting two underage followers he took as brides in what his church deemed "spiritual marriages."

The 55-year-old head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints stood quietly as the decision of the Texas jury was read. He received the maximum sentence on both counts

The jury deliberated less than half an hour.

The 55-year-old Jeffs was convicted Thursday.

Police had raided the group's remote West Texas ranch in April 2008, finding women dressed in frontier-style dresses and hairdos from the 19th century as well as seeing underage girls who were clearly pregnant. The call to an abuse hotline that spurred the raid turned out to be a hoax, and more than 400 children who had been placed in protective custody were eventually returned to their families.

Jeffs has claimed he was the victim of religious persecution. The FLDS, which has at least 10,000 members nationwide, is a radical offshoot of mainstream Mormonism.

Jeffs represented himself after firing seven attorneys in the six months leading to the trial. He broke his courtroom silence with an objection marked by a nearly hourlong speech defending polygamy, and twice threatened the judge and the court with warnings of punishment from God.

Eleven other FLDS men were charged with crimes including sexual assault and bigamy. The seven others who have already been prosecuted were convicted, receiving prison sentences of between six and 75 years.

It's really the other way around. "Mainstream Mormonism" is a radical offshoot of original Mormonism because polygamy was illegal and stood in the way of statehood for UT.

I hate child abuse, but I don't agree with this sentence. Where were the parents? It's not like he kidnapped the girls and hid them in a back yard for 20 years like that guy up north in CA.

This country is supposed to support religious freedom yet the government decides on what freedoms religion can practice. Might as well give the country back to Britain.

Or become Irac and Iran.

What Jeffs did was wrong in the minds of almost anyone, but simply removing the girls would have gone a long way to solving the problem. I know I contradict myself, but it would have been interesting to see if they returned.

If that were the case, I'd say leave them the f*** alone. There are some sick, sick people out there, he's just one of them. Hasn't murdered anyone, yet he spends more time behind bars than a hell of a lot of murderers.

How's that work?

I am really happy he got a stiff sentence but I'd like to understand your point. So if you were given total sentencing power based on the guilty verdicts handed down by the jury - your sentence would be?

The parents are every bit as brainwashed as are N. Korean school kids. Any of them who go against Jeffs get banished and their houses get repossessed. You can call it religious freedom all you want, but when you have men my dad's age knocking up 15 yr. olds, there is no way that's consensual or religious. It's statuatory rape at the very least. Read up on the Lost Boys of Colorado City. They're the teenage boys who get banished because they compete with older men for teenage girls. They end up in Hurricane, UT and in all kinds of trouble with drugs and the law. That whole operation in Colorado City and Hilldale is designed to be a child rape farm, where they raise little girls to be brainwashed, obedient sex toys for Jeffs and his preferred male disciples.

Well, I have to admit as a judge I have to follow the guidelines of the law AFA minimum and maximum sentencing goes, so I guess it's a moot point.

These girls were 15. In some countries that's an old maid. Pedophiles involved with say 8 year olds are the sick ones (I know I open a can of worms there). Who's to establish legal age anyway? We have changed voting and drinking ages. Isn't it all kind subjective?

The issue here seems to be two fold; polygamy and child molestation. If I had my way I'd lower the age of consent to 14 and allow polygamy with proper documentation. By that I mean if you're a conscientious objector, you better have a track record. If you're a practicing polygamist, you better have a history of belonging to that faith.

Again, that will be subjective. But this country knows how to handle subjective issues, right? Alcohol and cigarettes are legal but pot is not.

Twisted religious fanatics make these rules.

I get what Milt is saying. I don't agree with it, but I understand his rationale.

But I'm just tickled pink that he's in jail. I firmly believe that he knew what he was doing was wrong and was doing it for his own personal gain, not actually for religious reasons.

Well, I don't get what Milt is saying. I can't imagine anyone that has been around 14 year old girls thinking they are mature enough to make adult decisions. Especially decisions about having sex and children with lecherous middle age men. I would say most 18 year old girls don't have the experience or maturity to fend off a boner from a sick middle age man. It may legal, but that doesn't make it right.

Even the adults in that community can't make their own decisions. They are totally brainwashed. The police there enforce their own laws, not state laws. They swear an oath to Jeffs, yet are chartered by the state as bonafide cops. All kinds of illegal shenanigans goes on there outside of the polygamy and child rape thing.

They are the biggest welfare con artists in the world too. Since the state only recognizes one spouse for each other spouse, all the wives after the first wife are considered single moms and thus eligible for welfare. The FLDS gang believe in "starving the beast" and so they have all those wives and kids on welfare, even though Jeffs's empire is worth over $1 billion.

Then you have the highest incidence of Fumarase Deficiency Syndrome in the kids there because of all the inbreeding. It's a sick, sick place that needs to be shut down. Go visit Colorado City someday and tell you believed such a place could ever exist in the US.

The FLDS crowd is not at all representative of the rest of UT. In fact, the most radical of them live in AZ, ID, TX, Mexico and Canada, not UT. However, they do practice Mormonism in its original form, and what the main LDS Church now calls itself (the modern or mainstream Mormon Church), I would call an offshoot of the FLDS. They only got rid of polygamy in order to get statehood, not because it wasn't the original teaching of Joseph Smith, who really only invented it as a religious cover for his serial philandering and child molestation.
