Someone talk me out of this...

I've been lusting after one of these for years.

I'm close to retiring and I'm seriously considering this car. It would not be my daily but it wouldn't sit idle either.

Get it in black and put bull bars on the front and I'm with you, Peter.

Aren't there crazy car taxes in Aus that would make that cost like $1 million?

You come to a Porsche board asking for us to talk you out of that gorgeous thing? You need to go join a Prius board for support like that.

I'd take an Aston over the Bentley

I've driven the Aston... I felt disappointed. Too harsh. The current 997 drives better.
Think a very fast Ford Falcon or Commodore with hard suspension on 19 inch wheels.

Take a look at the depreciation on one of those...that ought to cure ya.

Your best bet is to buy a used one. Let somebody else take the hit.

If it is more than a tenth of your worth, don't buy it.

BTW, what is the depreciation on a car like that ? I would want to know.

About 40% the first year. And WHY OH WHY IS THAT....Well that is really simple anyone who can afford a 150K to 200K car can afford a 350K car and not miss the dinero. So why would I spend the 200K on used when for a few $$$$$ more I can get NEW. So to be able to sell the car the price has to drop to where it matters to someone...thus 40% or more depreciation.

One would also think that with that expensive of a car the maintence would be done, but many time the rich are so fking cheap they don't do it as they know in a coupla years they can dump the car and go buy a new one. So maintence doesn't matter to them.

I suppose with a warranty the maintence cost wouldn't matter much...but just U wait till after the warranty has expired...the car will be eating those steaks U used to be eating...and one can't just take it to any old corner wrench...I have heard horror stories about shops that were dedicated to servicing that marque..so finding a mechanic who will do it right without cutting corners is easier said than done. AND THEY STILL CHARGED HIM WHAT?

I never had the stroke to be able to afford one of those new in the first place. I always thought in terms of lost income on that kindo dinero. Second why would I want to take such a hit on the depreciation? With that kind of dinero why not buy something with an appreciation curve instead of a depreciation curve.

If ya have that kind of crazy money to spend..go buy an ORIGINAL Speedster, or mid 60's 12 cylinder.Ferrari.. U will get the ame kind of looks and thrill.

After awhile one does get tired of the looks..and the bills.

For a long journey a nice dependable nondescript car serves very well. Believe me anonymous is better.

Thanks Tabs. You've given me a lot to think about.

As I said in my opening post I'm retiring from work soon. I'm on my own and my kids are grown.
I do have a lady friend but to be completely honest I'm not sure how long that will last. She's making noises about moving in and that isn't going to happen any time soon.

I can afford it and I intend to keep it indefinitely. If nothing else I'll find out how well built they really are.
I'll always have an air cooled 911 and a more practical "daily" for grocery shopping etc.
This car will be for visiting friends in the country and special occasions.

Also, I have to fly to Melbourne to actually test drive one. We have a dealership in Adelaide but they don't have a demo. Actually they don't even have a car in the showroom right now.

I agree, That was pretty much what I was going to write, especially the speedster/ferrari bit.
