My lunch with a Russian Oligarch

I was visiting a good friend in the south of France last week. We were sitting on the deck having drinks when his neighbour, a Russian oligarch who must remain unnamed, waved us over to the fence and invited us for lunch the following day...for "a bit of seafood".

Well, some iPhone pictures follow. There was just my friend and I, two Russian women, and three children for the food. The RO wasn't even there, as he had to fly to London unexpectedly.

The entire yard was heaving with this wonderful food, and a huge tub of pink Perrier Jouet champagne. I only managed a few snaps before security guy politely asked me to take no further pictures for security reasons.

Here are various exotic fish pates in wine and aspic:

Lobster....

and more lobster....

...and various shellfish...

...and sides of arctic char very ambitiously decorated....

...more fishy delicacies in aspic

...more shellfish...

...zucchini flowers wrapped around various things...

etc. etc

There were at least thirty of these type of platters set up on various tables in his yard. Plus a whole suckling pig, and a whole lot of roasted quail. And desserts out the ying yang. All for essentially four people.

No recession in Russia — it would appear.

And I couldn't even begin to describe the house.....it was so over the top.

If someone would like to permanently donate some funds, I would be willing to try to understand...

Cap D'Antibes?

Oligarch central over there. There is one guy who has a helipad and uses it frequently. Another guy/ or same guy? has a Bugatti and and is sandwiched between Black suburbans whenever he drives the car.

My dad was at a restaurant and enjoyed a nice $2,000 wine courtesy of the russians. They ordered a bottle, drank a glass and left the rest. My dad asked the owners if he could take it and they said sure. $30,000 drink tabs are common. They pick by price.

It's all silly money to them any way.

I know plenty of folks who could afford to have a spread like that. But they don't. Because their not nouveau riche Russian pigs.

I no longer feel so guilty about not cleaning my plate.

Dottore, you should have told the security guy, "It's ok. This is for my Pelican buddies. They're cool."

Yes. That is one attribute that will affect their behavior.

But these people have more money than the typical Fortune 50 CEO types. The will send in a year what most rich people would consider their entire fortune.

I've heard its in vogue for the rich Russians to order everything on the menu, and then not eat any of it. They do it as a way of ostentatiousness (sp). It won't last forever, so I hope they are enjoying it!

Oh yes. The extent of their wealth is hard to fathom. A Fortune 50 CEO might make twenty million a year for a couple of years, and then cash out his stock options for a few tens of millions more and retire with perhaps $50 million in the bank. That gets you a five million dollar yacht, a co-op on Park Place West, a suite at the Charles Cinq, and lifetime access to the corporate jet. The CEO of United Health made a hundred million a couple of years in a row and got sued to repay some. No one else comes close as far as being a CEO.

The Oligarchs are in a whole different league. Their boats will cost $50 million - the life savings of a Fortune 50 CEO. They have a portfolio of hundred million dollar houses. Their cars will cost more than an ordinary person in the US will save in his lifetime. It's the difference between millions and billions.

The reason the Oligarch is so much richer is easy to understand. The CEO is still an employee. He's a well paid employee, but he's still a member of the proletarians who sells his labor for a wage. The Oligarch has thrown off his chains and seized the means of production. Now he controls the wealth so he keeps the profit of the enterprise like a true capitalist.

Somewhere The Vohzd is smiling.
