Need to get a copy made.

Yes that sure was a great movie with some amazing surfing.
Dudes had a lot more style back then, so much more variety of wave attack.
Now they do amazing stuff - but they all have the same repertoire.

How about MR for "different"

That is some nasty looking water. Can anyone guess why the woman's holding her leash out of the water at about 3 minutes? Maybe she saw some sizable debris floating just below the surface.

An odd looking wave (the Chinese wave). But I would surf it. In fact I'd rather surf it than be on that prawn boat.

That sweet soul footage of Stephanie reminded me of the single most mind-blowing "Expression Session" footage that I can recall .. it was from the '70s, featuring "Buttons" Kaluhiokalani at Velzyland. Amazing. 360s many years before anyone else ..

So anyhow, I'm thinking about Buttons yesterday, and today out of the blue, my wife tells me Buttons has lung cancer. Bummer.

I can vouch, if there was one Hawaiian in the water who was full of love, it was Buttons. He's always been a nice guy .. So if anyone feels like sending a little Aloha Kokua to Buttons, the 3rd link should be clicked. (Never could find that mind-blowing Expression Session footage)

$16,244 raised by 184 people in 9 days, according to the website. Not bad. I know I'm not Buttons but I wonder if this happened to me - could I raise this much - that quick?

Anyway...just wondering aloud....I wish him well. Cancer sucks.

Buttons was a guest on "Dog the Bounty Hunter" show once. I couldn't believe it. That was pretty cool.

He always had the best fro in surfing!

Yes, the surfing crowd (especially in Hawaii) pretty much pulls for one another. Buttons is also one of those happy go lucky guys everyone liked ..

.. dang.. having a problem downloading some old surf pics ..

That's some nice '70s Bells Beach and Winkipop, Baz. Bells may be my favorite spot outside of Hawaii. I've lucked out on waves there on about 70% of my visits (mostly business trips to nearbyMelbourne). My wife & I went down a year or so back, and missed a 20-ft swell by a day.

Baz 09-06-2013 04:50 PM

Cool, Geary. This era of surfing has always been my favourite. The Aussies of course were bustin' down the door and I couldn't get enough. Here's some more excellent footage you might enjoy from that era....

Me too. That surfboard rocks! My stepbrother from Belgium just tried surfing for his first time in CA. He told me it was so hard! Ha ha. I tried to warn him. But he said it was fun and he wants to try it again.
