Florida, August, 95 degrees, 75% humidity..........

.....and last night our 17 year old air conditioner takes a crap.

Two guys are here installing a new unit and will have it working by bed time. I sent the wife and daughter to the mall but told them not to buy anything. I cranking it down so low tonight we'll need blankets.

Why didn't this happen in November or March?

Color me hot, sticky and more in debt that yesterday.

105 here and no humidity. Like sticking your face in front of an open oven door.

Actually, we have about 15-20% humidity right now. Still not much to speak of though.

Where? Only place I saw 111 was in the car. Whiteman airport shows 109 and Van Nuys, 105 and Burbank, 102. Newhal and Lancaster are at 105 as well.

That was my car thermo driving up Sepulveda pass. I was in NoHo and Sherman Oaks. Varied in triple digits pretty much the whole area until I dropped down on the other side of the pass.

That explains it. I was out for a bit at lunch, now safely back inside with the blinds closed and AC on. Still 81* inside, downstairs. I've abandoned the upstairs for now.

+1000... too bad it didn't happen 3 months ago so you could have gotten 3 months of electricity savings.

A bit over 100° today, and pretty much every day for the last month or so. But, because we've only had 9" of rain all year, the humidity is unusually low. Also, as stated, no mosquitoes this year which is great. Still, the heat is a bit stifling. Not as bad as someplace like AZ though. Dry heat sucks as bad (but differently) as damp heat when it's 120°.

Hmm, death by sauna or death by giant hair dryer. Yeah, both'll kill you just as dead.

Lucky you being in that Great Florida weather. I'm still working up here in PA and had to wear a Levi jacket TWICE this week to work!

Yesterday was really weird for SoCal. It was so humid that clouds came in like it was going to rain. It felt as humid as Southern Illinois (all I can compare it to since I have never been to FL). The clouds were a nice break but it was still hot.

Yes, when it gets to 115 degrees it doesn't matter if the humidity is low. I remember riding my bike up the hill back from class a couple years ago. It felt like my eyes were cooking like a hard boiled egg.

Not sure where you were, but humidity was at 11% all day in the Valley, only going up a little in the evening.

Yo Paul,

Across the state from you on the other coast. I had the same thing happen to me LAST year about this time! My outside coil was bad but covered under warranty still but it took FIVE days to get it swapped out. I bought a window and a portable AC unit to get by. I took the portable back but kept the window unit just in case.

Even with my AC on it gets up to 82 inside. The rains this afternoon helped. I'm trying to embrace the heat though because I know what's coming...winter!!! And the past 3 winters in Florida haven't been exactly normal! Maybe this year we will get back to normal.

Hope your system got fixed OK - Regards, Baz

I am closer to the coast. The marine layers stick around a lot longer than they do in the valley.

It's been 117-118 in Havasu City all weekend, and Grivas is there. At least there's a lot of water there.

As for Florida, the AC's always die when it's hot and humid. When I lived in south Florida back in the 90's, my old AC died TWICE in the late summer - both times on a Friday evening! I had to wait unto Monday to get it looked at both times. The second time, it was dead. I bought a new one and never looked back.

High heat and super high humidity (and mosquitos at night) is MISERABLE to sleep in.

We have only run our AC a few times around Julfy 4th weekend and then yesterday and today. This summer has been mild. So Cal is definately one of the best climates around in my book, even if it can get a little hot.

Good luck Paul! Had a manager a few years back that was a real ass. The AC went out during an early hot spell on a weekend... Told the manager about it and in her uncaring voice, said there was nothing that could be done until Monday - a week later! My place was well into the 90's INSIDE!

Yea, I have to admit that I've only run the AC a few times this entire summer. Maybe twice - until this current heat wave. The switch has been on day and night for two days now.
