Ever Just Wanna Get Away From It All For A Few Years?

I swear I am getting bitter as the years roll on. So many people are just but heads and mean spirited and self serving and nasty and and and...makes me want to pack up some essentials and live up in the Canadian Rockies for a few years...isolated...alone...well, maybe I would bring my dog.

A few years? What exactly would make me want to come back?

One of my dreams is to do what that guy Richard Proneke did. Build a cabin up in the wilderness away from everyone, and chill out for a few yrs by myself. ( and my dog..)

Other than that I'm very happy with my life.

I'm kind of doing it... I have great neighbors and friends and keep busy, but I have managed to cut out the nastiness and bitterness that is the normal world. I highly recommend it!

Actually, ever since I was about 10 years old I have had this feeling that I will end up on a mountain top in the Himalayans. For the peace and serenity and away from everything man has created as a nonsense placebo for true meaning and understanding of myself in the context of natures limitless beauty.

Or something similar..

I have been feeling this way myself. In my case, I want to take my wife with me...

Absolutely. I am almost afraid to say it...but at times the urge also includes stopping contact with my wife and family, just so we will all appreciate each other more than we seem to do with daily contact.

i just want to sleep when I want, eat when I want, do what I want until I feel motivated to actually do something useful.

It has gotten so bad with me that at times working on my car seems like "work".

I guess I am just sort of sick of people...

We moved out of the urban setting into the foot hills a couple of years ago, and it's great. I had the opportunity to live in the high mountains in a small cabin for six summers a long time ago, and I could see myself doing that forever. My wife, not so much.

Not me. There is no place to drive my 911 up in the mountains. I need asphalt!

I tried, after being in Costa Rica a few times we bought some property close to the beach in 1990, built a nice house, lived there off and on for a few years, after a two year stint my wife came in and said, If you plan on living here any longer you will have to find a different wife. I said if you leave I won't need a wife. but we moved back in 2000 and finally sold the place. I actually never planned on coming back, sometimes I--

I've worked hard, continually, since I was a teen. I'm 53. My greatest periods of unemployment were perhaps a couple of weeks, and they made me crazy. Working is what guys do. Non-negotiable. Plus, I've deliberately sought difficult and stressful work. Labor relations is not for the feint of heart. Most recently, I ran a statewide organization and the daily commute from my house to office was an absolute minimum of one hour each way, right through downtown Seattle traffic. My days were never smaller than ten hours of work.

Since April, I have been unemployed. This time, it is most definitely NOT making me crazy to not work. Indeed, it is making me sane. It took about a month for my breathing to become smooth, for example. Dreaming returned (I guess, because I was sleeping for a change). I've gotten back into music, which is something important to me that I had left behind almost three decades ago. I am planning a couple or three backpacking trips. Mt. St. Helens on the 12th. Cascade Pass and Sahale Glacier sometime in September. Also, Chikamin Lake, which will be brutal as it's about 17 miles including probably 9000 feet elevation gain (total, not net). I've been sawing and splitting firewood and doing other chores for my angelic lady friend, who lives off the grid and heats with wood.

I could go on, but wanted to offer a little advice for Lube and whoever else is interested. I think society has gone a little haywire in recent decades. I think that many of us are subjected to more stress than the human machine is designed to handle. Stress, and the other element is isolation. Humans used to commune as part of their daily routine. Today, we're in cars alone, we watch TV. Each of us has become a bit too much of an island. There used to be sufficient time to gather information, have discussions and make decisions. Today, we make them on the fly with whatever info is available. It's just too much. To analogize, some of us are 911 RSR's, and some of us are pickup trucks and Dodge Neons. And if we all get on the track and keep the RPM's at 8500 and keep the brakes glowing orange, it is just a matter of time before a mechanical failure. I suspect Lube is sensing this, and needs to pit.

Getting out of the urban ratrace and into a rural corner of the world is a good start.

I still need to work just to pay the bills right now, but if I can get to a point I don't have to, my current setting will suffice just fine. I can go "off grid" pretty easily, have enough resources on the property and can basically do whatever I want. No neighbors to speak of, no stupid HOAs, no intrusive government, etc. It does a LOT to help with one's stress level.

If I really want to "get away" I've looked at a couple of South Pacific locations (yes really) as well as a couple in Central/South America. I love the Tetons and that area of the country but it's just too damn cold half the year - NH is about my limit for cold weather and what I can handle!

Supe, I think your perspective is a good one. Agree with most of what you're saying. Rock on!

yes, yes, yes.

Just put my wife and I down by the ocean, reading books and napping, then go home, fiddle with a car or some honey-do, and call it a night.

Come on out to Arizona and if you are doing pretty well in life, do as Motion does and have a place in the Rockies for summer and winter down here.

When I lived in Dallas I survived but did not prosper. Now that I am out of that place am a lot happier person.

Just had this conversation a day or so ago. I've stayed the same, more or less, since being a young man. Sure, I use computers and a cell phone (I had an early car phone that cost a grand) but my ethics haven't changed.

As GenX matured I saw a different ethic, but before they got homes and families, all was OK. GenY never had a chance. So, with GenX running the world with GenY working for them, we're screwed.

Been lied to this week? I'd be surprised if you weren't.

No wonder you want out.

My bud is a marine wrench. He's super bright and tackles everything. His latest was setting up the engines on a 40 knot+ 185' go fast 1,500hp x 3 rocket launcher pirate catcher for the sea lanes off of Somalia. he goes online and crabs these stints that may last for a week to a year. Many of the crews do that.

anyway........ he meets his long hair on a job. The guy's been doing it for years. In between jobs he hikes deep into the Cascades to a rustic cabin and talks to God. He'll stay in there alone and sneak out once in awhile for supplies. When the $ starts running out he picks up a sea job for awhile so he can do another stint talking to God. He talks God and what God tells him all the time. When my bud would see him on board he say "Hi. What's new with God?" and the guy would take off on philosophy, God, religion, God, society, God, people, God, work, God, the ocean, God etc etc

otherwise...... when you need to cool out take off alone for a few weeks anywhere that suits you. Beats living a dream of "If only I could...."
