Here comes Hurricane Irene!
![]() Hurricane Irene [well, still technically tropical storm Irene] has formed in the caribbean, and is forecast to hit Fort Lauderdale where I live around 3 PM Thursday afternoon. I've got plenty of hurricane supplies- I can live off the grid for about two weeks, feet up....beer in hand. -Concrete block house with concrete tile roof. -Four miles inland. -Miami-Dade rated garage door with 3X5 steel box section reinforcement beams. Gotta protect that Porsche.... -6.2 KW generator and a real twist-lok tie-in for my home electrical system. Won't run the A/C, but it will make everything else work. -25 gallons of gasoline, plus three cars with full tanks. -5/8 inch tempered glass "impact" windows, rated to take a direct hit from a 3 foot section of 2X4 at 155 mph. Without intrusion- -MAK-90 semi-automatic assault rifle and 300 rounds of ammunition. Really, the only thing missing at this point is the beer! I'll take care of that on Tuesday....Stella Artois please! N! |

It's going to piss me off if it messes up my plants! I'm losing a coconut tree in the back yard [got struck by lightning two weeks ago], and I don't want to replace anything else. It took me five friggin' years to get the place to where it is at! Generally, all hurricanes do is lift a few shingles and knock down some trees.
Dammit! N |

Good luck to you and everyone else over that way. Not being in Florida at home makes me pretty anxious during hurricane season.

Ya just can't reason with hurricane season...
At least you're prepared. It never ceased to amaze me when I lived down there how casually some folks viewed preparedness. "oh I've got some batteries and some water". Uh huh. |

Just test fired the generator and checked the hurricane shutters, got the foodstocks and water back into fighting shape, live in a updated code block home so we'll stay unless we just don't want to. Maybe DollyWood.

Freakin' A. I'm scheduled to be in West Palm Beach for depositions Tuesday through Friday. I have to be back early Friday evening for a social function with some very important people in my wife's company, and ready Saturday morning to prepare for a weekend at our cabin with some even more important people from the Mother Company. It will not end well if I'm stuck there all weekend, or evacuated or something. Of course I reserved a place right on the beach. It was about the same as the Hilton Garden Inn, so why wouldn't I?

Looks like I'd better beat the rush to the grocery store later this week... we needed beer and cat food anyway I guess.

Get some pictures I have never been in a hurricane, you seem more prepared than others or is this SOP down there?

He'll be alright. But how about us in SC?
It'll probably change direction several more times, but in the meantime it's a fun pic to look at.

Definitely send all the rain you can spare. What we really need is a TS or maybe CAT 1 hurricane to come ashore about 1/2 way between Brownsville and Corpus.
