Hard side case for 1864 Springfield?

Was just visiting my folks in PA last week and my pop gave me his 1864 Springfield musket with bayonet and sheath, belt and U.S. buckle , a .70 cal French flint lock pistol and what looks to be a Knights of Columbus sword. We are now trying to get these items to our West coast home. Problem is I haven't been able to find a hard side gun case that's long enough for the Springfield. It measures almost 54" long and most of the cases are 52" or 53".

Any idea where to find one?

Antique guns......

Both are antiques, made before 1898. You should be able to buy a cardboard box or better yet, go to a gun store and see if they will give you a suitable rifle box. Then, make certain that the guns are properly packed and ship them to yourself via USPS or UPS. If nothing else works, go find a refrigerator box and cut out one side. That should give you enough cardboard to make a box. For extra protection, you could sandwich the rifle between two thin pieces of wood. The key here is good packing. Or, you could google "antique guns" and look for a vendor that sells extra long hard cases for rifles such as yours. There are bound to be some sources for reenactors, etc. Good luck!

Take the gun out of the stock, then it will fit...

Actually, the stock is only about 1" shorter than the assembly. I'll probably just have him box it up as suggested.

get a piece of PVC pipe big enough and long enough for the gun to fit in and glue a cap on one end and a screw-on cap on the other. Pad it with bubble-wrap (I like that word!) and you have a hard case.
