Sucks to be in SoCal right now

Huge Power Outage down in San Diego.

Power Out in San Diego | NBC San Diego

Quote:
Communities across San Diego went dark on Thursday afternoon as a power outage plagued parts of the county. Southern parts of Orange County, eastern San Diego and northern Mexico are reportedly out as well.

Power went out throughout the county for all SDG&E customers. All other service providers have power.

No cause has been determined and there is no estimate as to when the problem will be fixed, according to California Independent System Operator.

Roads are congested throughout the county as traffic lights are out. Motorists are stuck in a gridlock

Not always.

I know it's been hot hot everywhere but it finally got out here on the coast. It was 85* in my house at 6am going to 95 outside by 4 pm. Every air conditioner plugged in is running all over SoCal. We don't have that much electricity.

Apparently, much of the power from San Clemente south into Mexico and east to AZ is out.

Quote:
Tens of thousands of people were without power after a major outage knocked out electricity from Southern California to the Arizona border on Thursday afternoon, halting flights in San Diego, the nation's eighth largest city.

Outages were reported across San Diego County and all the way to Yuma, Ariz. Residents in San Clemente in Orange County, north of San Diego, also said their lights were out.

Most of the northern part of Baja California, including the border city of Tijuana, also was without power, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported. The power went out about 3:45 p.m.

All outgoing flights from San Diego's Lindbergh Field have been halted, airport spokeswoman Rebecca Bloomfield said. Incoming flights are arriving with delays.

Thirteen police stations have been able to continue operating and taking 911 calls by using generators, police spokeswoman Andra Brown said.

The California ISO, which operates the state's wholesale power system, has "nothing to report," spokesman Steven Greenlee said. He declined to elaborate.

I'm not in that area, but the power has gone out 3x since midnight at my place in Santa Monica. Brief outages though...

I work for a company that has lots of "branch" style locations all over the US, and we saw what I would estimate is about 100 locations all go down at the same time.

It's interesting that some of the reports say the outages extend into AZ and Mexico, but the one spot that I've seen where they give a number says "10s of thousands". It seems like a pretty big swath of space in what I assume is a fairly populated space.

OK, now there is a number reported that sounds right.

1.4 million without power; electricity may not be fully restored until Friday [Updated] - latimes.com
Quote:
More than 1.4 million customers lost power during a blackout in the San Diego area, and utility officials said power might not be fully restored until Friday.

San Diego Gas and Electric said the outage appears to have originated in Arizona and that the agency is working with California power officials to bring the power back. Officials said the outages extended across Southern California and into Arizona and Baja California.

FULL COVERAGE: Southern California blackout

The loss of power led to a shutdown of two reactors at the San Onofre nuclear power plant.

Gil Alexander, a spokesman for Southern California Edison, said the power outage did not cause any safety issues. Alexander said a fluxation in power caused the reactors to shut down at 3:38 p.m. but that the overall plant continues to have power.

This just sounds too weird to not be planned by someone to me.

Quote:
Power was expected to be out well into the night.

"Essentially we have two connections from the rest of the world: One of from the north and one is to the east. Both connections are severed," an SDG&E official said.

Apparently, some of the area that lost power had temps topping 110°. I think they may be hurting.

You'd rather be on the east cost? Without power AND underwater?

PHOENIX – At approximately 3:30 pm today, the North Gila – Hassayampa 500 kV transmission line near Yuma, Ariz., tripped off line resulting in a major power outage across southwest Arizona and into Southern California. Among APS customers, approximately 56,000 lost service throughout Yuma, Somerton, San Luis and Gadsden. APS is in the process of restoring service to customers in these communities.

The outage appears to be related to a procedure an APS employee was carrying out in the North Gila substation, which is located northeast of Yuma. Operating and protection protocols typically would have isolated the resulting outage to the Yuma area. The reason that did not occur in this case will be the focal point of the investigation into the event, which already is under way.

Woops! Wrong switch!
