Jackie Stewart and Rick Mears Confirm: Mustang Beats Well Set Up 944

And have been doing it for over 30 years!

Was looking at some old car magazines from my teenage years and found the proof. This is from Road & Track, 1980.

There's a turbo Mustang (SVO?) sitting in a yard on my way to/from the shop, rotting away (actually no rot, just sitting). I'd love to get my hands on it, but too many projects right now.

A stock 924 is not a well set up 944. Not even close. And that's a mustang turbo.

How about a comparison to a 944 turbo?

That's a 924, not a 944. The 944 would run rings around the Mustang.

1980 924 - 110 HP
924 Turbo - 143 HP
1980 Mustang turbo 132 HP
1980 Mustang N/A 4 cyl - 88hp

Comparing apples to oranges.

If you all actually go back and read the title, it said it matched the 924 in 25 of 29 tests. If it actually beat the 924, wouldn't they have said that? What a sad comparison. That's embarrassing.

I've owned both Mustangs, 944s, 944 turbos, and a lowly 924.

Absolutely no contest between the buzzy CIS-injected 2.0 liter engine of the 924 and the counter-balanced Motronic 2.5 of the 944.

I will never again own a 924, but my current daily driver is a 1987 944S.

That being said, I do really like the 2005-2009 Mustangs.

Very funny ad- Thanks for posting.

What?

An advertisement in a car magazine that turns out to be a bunch of lies? How can this be! This is a huge scandal.

Someone contact the people behind Fox News immediately.....

Having never driven either of those cars, I don't have an opinion but in Jackie's recently published bio, he tells of his decades long, high level relationship with Ford....unbiased world champion...don't think so. Cheers

Can you even buy new tires for the weird 390mm Metric wheels those early-80's Mustangs rode on?

That's funny. My "old" 944 turbo (951) with slightly modded drivetrain and stock suspension (freshened up, but stock) humiliated a "new" Mustang Cobra a few years ago on a certain drive up through the mountains north of Malibu.

I guess it didn't happen since the article says it couldn't.

Your post title says 944, the article says 924. Hmm...Maybe I should report you to NPR for stretching the truth into a lie to support an argument. You never know, they might be hiring!

In 1984, the 944 vs Mustang SVO would have been a close match
In 1987, the 951 (944 Turbo) vs Mustang 5.0 would have been a close match
In 2011, the Cayman versus Mustang GT 5.0 would be a close match

Always the same story
