Really? That looks like a bit more than a scaffold. I don't recall making scaffold from I-beams of that size.

Regarding the above two observations, is the visual content of that photo really sufficient to warrant them?

Also, consider:

First, the bold black words describe what the temporary structure's purpose is (the construction will be completed).

Second, the bold black words also describe the materials with which the structure was built (materials commonly used to build scaffolding).

Third, pretend that you guys are the, most likely low level, newspaper writer writing the article, at the junior high school level that newspaper articles of this nature are usually written, and tell me, what word would you use to replace the red word?

I'm just amused. Because it's amusing what banal and innocuous things form the basis for contentious remarks here.

Look at the size of those beams in the photo. If thats scaffold, I sure want to get in on the scaffold building business for the US government.

My point of posting this is that whoever the local manager was in charge of this disaster, he clearly lied to the reporter saying it was a 'scaffold', and the reporter couldn't be bothered to question him.

Those beams are part of the new construction. They didn't fall.

What fell was "a mangled mess of wooden planks, metal supports and black tarpaulin", the "scaffold", "installed to protect cars from overhead construction".

The photo isn't at all clear, related to the text in the article. I'm very familiar with that border crossing, passed through it many times over the years, saw the structure being renovated being built, back when there were maybe eight? lanes.

i've seen dropped I-beams. ugly.

i'm pretty sure in the industry any work platform can be called a scaffold.

my buddy took a ride on a falsework system collaspe in Napa. he is lucky he wasnt killed. (falsework is the framework that holds up the construction forms for bridge construction when the concrete is cast in place..monstrous stuff)

Watch what will happen here:

- There will be an investigation

- It will be found that the Federal contractor did NOT use E-Verify.

- The workers who were supposed to keep the debris cleaned off could not read english so did not know how often to clean it.

- This was a "Stimulus Project" so it was rushed and bypassed normal contracting channels.

- The Fox New channel will go into much detail.

- The contractor is actually from either Nancy Pelosi's or Harry Reed's districts but they did NOT have any connection with the company.

- A couple of sharp lawyers will get those injured a nice settlement check.

- By the end of this month this will all be forgotten!

It already started, the government man in charge of all of the crossing upgrades noted the main contractor hired a sub that hired another sub that hired a another sub that "just does scaffolding"!!?? He noted that "it is the government's place to check the records of the sub contractors...." This from the San Diego U-T today.
