ok, my turn.. mom just had a stroke..

Wow, after reading all the threads on here about their family members having health issues, now my mom had a multiple stroke last Thursday. They were traveling from Quebec to Phoenix and stopped here and at my brother's house in New Orleans. I talked to them Thursday night and dad said she wasnt feeling well and went to lay down. When my brother got home from work, she was still in pain and was dizzy, etc so he took her to the hospital and they air lifted her into Oschner clinic. Doctor said it was too late to give her the clot busting treatment as it was after 4-6 hours. Now she can move her legs slightly while seated, but cannot walk or stand. Doctor said he is confident she will regain everything but it could takes months as she will have to learn how to walk again. Now we are trying to figure out how to get them home to PHX in the upcoming weeks and get their car home also, so I'll probably make the road trip and send them by air with my sister. She is 77 but a little 5'0 fire plug.. Always on the go with no previous health problems and now all of a sudden, she cant walk..

The magnitude of this is just sinking in..

Damn! I wish you well through this. Your education has just started...pay attention, listen well. The more you learn, the more able you will be to help your mother.

Wow Snake that is tough news. Hope she has a strong quick recovery!!
Since she is otherwise fit and well that should bode well.

Hang in there and best wishes for a full recovery. Medical science has had some huge breakthroughs in stroke rehabilitation in the past years.

Sorry to hear about this but glad she is ok.

Good friends of mine run a charter company based here in the Phoenix area. Let me know if you want to look at that option.

Hang in there Marc! on Monday, my Mother couldn't talk, and by wednesday she couldn't move her right arm / wrist / hand, and her right leg was very weak as well, plus she couldn't swallow. Today I watched her feed herself (pureed food), and she walked 14 feet with a walker, and we all had a good time reliving old memories in our house, with her doing most of the talking. Her speech is still slurred, and it gets worse when she is tired, but she IS speaking. She was also squeezing one of those silicone balls with her right hand.

I'm not trying to steal your thunder here, I just truly want you to know that there is hope, and she WILL get better. I know exactly what you are going through. It's one HELL of an emotional roller coaster, but as Rikoa told me, "just be there for the journey". If there's ANYTHING I can do, just yell. I know it feels like you're alone with this, but trust me, you aren't, my friend. And be sure to get some "fresh air" from time to time to help clear the mind, and get rid of some stress. I wish you, and your Family the best!

Sorry to hear that Marc. Our family wishes her the best. Stay aggressive about the rehab and make sure they tell you why they think it happened so she can have max therapy directed.at preventing a recurrence

Thank you all for the replies. She was moved out of the ICU today, so that is a good sign. She also tried to use a walker today, but no luck. The biggest clot is still there and until it passes or is reduced, they won't release her. She is good spirits though and really the only thing 'wrong' is the walking issue. they do expect a full recovery though.

Thanks again for the thoughts and replies..
