Tape around new Windshields?
Why do they put tape (usually the blue painter's tape) around new windshields? Is it to keep water and or debris from getting under the trim?
I'm just curious. I got a new windshield put in this morning. They said "don't wash the car for 48 hours and you can take the tape off tomorrow. The tape was coming off on the way home. Actually, it was coming off sitting in the lot waiting for me to pick up my car. Now, the car is going to be sitting in my garage until tomorrow when I drive it to work and park in in the garage at work. I've always been curious about the reason for the tape.

The tape is there to hold the glass from shifting while the windshield caulk takes a set. My guy won't let me take the car for 4 hours.

Thanks, good to know. I'm surprised they did such a crappy job of taping then.

The glass guys here usually put two large strips from the roof down onto the glass to keep the windshield from shifting. From what I've been told it's important to lower a window before shutting the car door or else the pressure can blow out the new seal.

It's not just caulk... most windshields are glued in.
Also, in many cases are they are structural; contributing to body rigidity. If I go to the shop, I have to leave it half a day. If they come to my office, they crack a couple windows and tell me to not move the car for half day. |

Right, I knew it wasn't caulk, but thanks for the info.
