Anyone want a nice 1984 GTI?

This is on BAT and eBay:

It's a nice car, but far from museum quality

Exactly. Clean, I'm sure. But 93,000 miles?

Why does this have a red interior? I thought that was only the '83s. I had an '84 and it had a much nicer dark blue with thin red stripes.

Nice, but not worth that kind of change....

On a more serious note, I'd be interested in a good driver under 4k.....

like that blurb about the rust repair. Front bumper sits crooked. Overpriced.

My 84 had the blue interior.

While everyone else is busy nitpicking, I'll just note that those were neat little cars.

In my experience, (I've owned both 83 and 84 GTI's in the past) only the White ones had the Blue interior.

Every Red and Black car I've seen had the Red interior.

They are a lot of fun, light and fun to toss around.

FWIW.

These were great little cars, I owned lots of them. But there is no getting away from the fact that the American styling on the US version just sucked. The Euro version with the round headlights, different bumpers / splitters and turn signals looked a lot cooler. And, I never saw a red dash board on a Euro specced car either. Only ever black. Usually black seats/carpets over there too especially on the later Mk1's.

Still, getting back to the point at hand, I think its a bit steep too. I'm not sure I like the fact that its selling so soon after buying, or the glossing over rust repairs and re-paints.

My brother had an 84. We took the front and rear bumbers off...looked much better. Before we took the rear bumper off, a fella could squat down facing backward, grab that bumper and pick the rear wheels up off of the pavement. Not really that heavy (25+ years ago).

What year did they stop calling them rabbits and golfs or did they just kinda phase that out over time?

I have a strong emotional attachment to the 83/84 GTI, and follow the market for them (weird, I know).

This is a relatively nice car, but the "museum" thing really should add no value to it. Being parked in the lobby of a building doesn't really add merit to the car.

Surprisingly, there are often quite a few of these in good, original shape for sale.

People have been predicting that the values would skyrocket, but it really hasn't happened, and I don't think it ever will.

I was really up on buying one a couple of years ago, until I went and drove a local one for sale.

Like a lot of things from the 80s, the memories are better than the reality.

That being said, I still love seeing them, and keep looking at the ones for sale. If I had unlimited space to keep cars, I probably would buy one purely for sentimental reasons, but as it is, they have fallen down on my list of "must haves."

Well, the 83/84 were Rabbits for sure, and my wife had an '86 many years ago and that was a "Golf" (didn't say Rabbit on it anywhere). I think the change was in 85 for the hardtops.

The original Rabbit convertible went on for a few years after that, though. I think til 87/88 or so. They kept calling that a Rabbit.

We have a few Mk1 shells out in the pasture, and 3 Mk1 pickups in different states, 2 diesels..

We just need a good Mk1 GTi to round out the mix...

If I can get the time rounded up, the gas burning caddy will be a LeMons car at some point...

I haven't driven a 1980s Rabbit since, well, the 1980s. But I recently borrowed a friend's 1992 Golf convertible for a 1 hour errand. In a couple minutes, it all came back, the car felt as familiar as my old FWD VWs felt 30 years ago. And it was a perfectly fun car to drive. Then again, my 911 is from the 1980s and so is my van. I'm not really spoiled by the last 30 years of progress . . .

They must have finished off the red interiors with the early '84s. I don't remember what time of year I looked at them, but when I got my black '84, all the other colors had the blue interior as well. I think the options were sunroof, AC, and front door vented windows. I think the vented windows were an $80 option.
