Just Finished TIMELINE by Michael Crichton...
A friend gave it to me Friday night. I read it this weekend. Like all of Crichton's work I couldn't put it down and when I did I longed to pick it up again.
Technically he is not the best writer but his style is so 'Saturday Matinee' that you feel like your in a dark theater munching on popcorn anxiously anticipating the next scene. His fiction books all run a similar formula but shyt are they entertaining!

I always enjoy his books! Haven't read this one, though. I think I'll pick it up.
I'll tell 'em it was recommended by the Lubemaster! ![]() angela

Great book. As a gearhead, have you read Airframe?

You should read Gregory Benford's "Timescape". This is a genuinely good sci-fi book (1980 Nebula award) that is better-written and more intriguing than "Timeline". Despite the similar names, the books and their concepts are not particularly similar. But I am quite sure you'll really like it.

Timeline was good, I liked the book better than the movie.
I read another one of his, can't remember the name, but it was about micro-sized robots that had artificial intelligence and could mass themselves into shapes. Good read also. Craig

Prey is what your thinking of....
Coma, Terminal Man, The Great Train Robbery and The Andromeda Strain were great as well as Congo and Jurassic Park, Eaters of the Dead (AKA the 13th Warrior) was very good as well - none of the movies were as good as the books.

Prey, yes, that was it. Thanks Lube!
In Jurassic Parkc, I still remember reading the part where the T-rex was swimming in the river after them and then sticking his nose into the waterfall to find them, absolutely riveting. Some writers have such a great gift that you don't want to put the book down at all, just read it start to finish. Craig

This is part of the problem with Americans, on that rare occasion that they decide to read a book, they read lightweight garbage.
No wonder this country is such ****. |

Whatever makes you feel better.
So tired of Americans eating everything on Earth, driving gigantic SUVs, having an opinion on everything based on reality tv shows and editorials. It's time for Americans to wake up or perish. Put down the fast food and read an actual ****ing book. |

Thanks for the recommendations. I liked Timeline years ago, so the other ideas are welcome.

A great book is like a meal.
Sometimes you just need a snack.

The guy is no James Joyce and thank God for that! What he writes is interesting and it keeps you reading. You don't have to spend hours on a passgae and it won't promote deep dialogue in certain acedemic circles but what it does do is provide an escape and at some level promote thought.
Not everything is high art. Opera is good as is rap, jazz and the blues as well but a good music diet balences all. Writing is no different.
