That's awful. They have no respect for anything.

Fuchen sad when you think about it.

I think a song should be written about the bridge thing (perhaps Gordon Lightfoot would help us with this) and another song should be written about the jackass, random schit that people do and yet a third song should be written about the decay of morals over my lifetime.

Now.....I'm going to have another beer and practice some more music. Dave.....you write the songs. In the key of "1."

I'm glad "Superman" chimed in. ;)

Those people should be strapped to a tree stripped naked and slowly have their skin removed with a dull electric potato peeler, then covered with brown gravy and locked in a cage with a rabid wolverine..........

True, a sign of the times. Meth will tweak you, get you going. Takes a lot of energy to steal metal. It’s a snake eating its tail, feeds and dies at the same time. Hmmm, sounds like society now.

Smack will mellow yo azz to the point of an 8 hr long afterglow. Kinda like the feeling you get after haven a strong love session. No wonder it was popular after the sexual revolution made an intro. The appetite to sustain that feeling was insatiable...

I have about a ton of stainless steel in the form of failed bearings. I wonder what I could get for them?

Time to go PEX? I haven't yet because I like cooper but...?

I don't like PEX... a lot of the crimp rings I've seen look kind of corroded after a while, and it involves getting a bunch more tools that I don't already have.

I'm hoping copper prices don't go anywhere - I have a ton of ungrounded wiring from the 1950s to replace. :(

porsche930dude 10-09-2011 08:39 AM

yea we've recently bought the tool for the pex and have used it a bit in new construction. So far no complaints.

The scrap guys accepting stolen goods need to be dealt with. Now I can understand that a scrapped bridge looks like typical scrap but much of the other stolen stuff is probably quite obvious.

I have heard thieves are melting stuff down to get rid of the evidence but that should be a huge flag when someone shows up with a ball of melted shiny copper.

We had someone steel some of our metal stock at work, and try to take it to a scrap yard. Luckily - they went to the SAME scrapyard we take our scrap to...

A lot of our scrap is uniquely shaped extruded aluminum bars, the parts that are two short to chuck into our saws. A guy working there recognized it as ours, but that it wasn't us trying to sell it. They gave us a phone call. Busted...

I just don't trust PEX. I am with you.

I think the real lesson here is that if you have a bridge that is important to you, it makes sense to also keep a spare. Just in case.

porsche930dude 10-09-2011 02:48 PM

or atleast chain it up to something sturdy :)

Or as Rouxroux would say...."take me to da bridge"..

Scrap metal prices are dropping. Less demand world wide. Last week cars/steel was $185 a ton. Now $170 a ton. Copper is now around $3.45 lbs (it was $4.20 ish last week). I was helping a buddy clean up his "Field of Dreams" and we took a few cars into the recycler until we found out the prices have dropped. He has about 40 more to go.

When you take anything in to the recycler here you and your vehicle is video taped. If you take a vehicle in to be scrapped the company records the serial numbers and gives the numbers to the police. Once the police have checked the serial numbers against the hot sheet, then the vehicle can be scrapped.

My mom lived in the country, about 10 minutes drive from town. And someone stole about a mile of telephone wire from the poles along the roadside. Nobody noticed anything. Which kind of suggests it was someone working for the lines company using their truck and gear.

I was just in NOLA this weekend. My cousin told me they have started stealing copper gutters off all the cool old houses there.

Porsche-O-Phile 10-10-2011 06:51 AM

When I did work for PacBell/ATT we had 60' long ground rods ripped clean out of the ground at a couple of unmanned remote repeater stations. Unreal.

I remember a story about a large stretch of the "new" 22 freeway where they'd just redone it having no lights... Because someone stole the wiring. I mean how does nobody notice them stealing wiring serving freeway lighting?

With such industriousness you'd think these guys could get jobs paying better...
