Calling Ian Mcarthur!

With my father passed away, and my mother now in an assisted living facility, I'm in the process of cleaning out their home.

My father loved music and below are iPhone pics of some of the stereo components set up in his study. It's all large—and I'm guessing dated—stuff, and probably has little value today. Can you confirm or deny?

Unless you tell me otherwise I'm planning to take it all to the Salvation Army thrift shop where someone might recycle this. I photographed the names of the speakers rather than the boxes. Are any of these good brands worth keeping? There's also a huge "Velodyne" bass box not pictured

It looks like a good assortment of better quality components - sort of budget hi-end - from the late 80s/early 90s. NAD pre & power amps, several CD players, Pioneer surround receiver, Castle speakers (from England) & Snell & PSB. None of it is really valuable but all is pretty decent quality. If you went to some effort & research & listed it all separately on Audiogon, you might be able to get several hundred dollars but it may not be worth the aggravation. The NADs & the Velodyne sub would be the easiest sells.

I've had good luck (and a lot of satisfaction) selling stuff like that on Ebay. I hate throwing away good things that work, and there are people out there that want it. Usually it isn't valuable enough for the scammers so the people you hear from really want it, and are willing to pay the packing and shipping costs to get it.

So you get it moved on to someone that will use and appreciate it, and make a little money in the process. It does take more effort than the S.A. though. What would your Dad want?

From a brief search: A real optimist in Naples . . .

Some info: NAD Product Archive (but they list the 114 as a receiver)

And good luck with the clean out. I know how hard it can be to sift through the detritus of your parent's lives.

Thanks for your reply Ian. I had to laugh out loud when I read your "budget high-end" remark because it describes my dad perfectly. He was a "budget high-end" sort of guy.

I wish I had the time to find good homes for this stuff but I don't—so its off to the Sally Ann. If anyone here wants this stuff and is prepared to pay shipping...let me know.

Might look on CraigsList and Ebay and get an idea of the value there before donating them, or sell them to George!

If that Betamax works, I'm interested in it. Long story.

Confirm it works if there are any of your dad's tapes around, then PM me a price + shipping, and I'll send you a Wells Fargo money order pronto.

When you put a tape in, rewind it to the beginning, then fast forward it to the end, then rewind it to the beginning again before attempting to play it. Supposedly, that limbers up a sketchy or semi-sketchy tape.

I'd be quite interested in the NAD units and the Snell speakers if you're interested in selling to Pelicans - but not sure if this stuff is stateside or not based on your frequent travels . PM me if you like.

I had no idea so many people would be interested in these things, and I'm sorry to now have to disappoint. But just to be clear, I never wanted money for these items—just wanted to find a home for them.

All the Hi-Fi stuff is going to Hendog—who was the first to PM.

As for the rest of the house, I had the brilliant idea to put word out in the Filipino community through some friends of mine. Today, like pilot fish, they picked the place clean and were both delighted and grateful. Everything my parents owned is now being re-used by people who really appreciate these things, and that's a fine feeling.

All's well that ends well.

That's great Mark. My mom passed several years ago, two months short of her 94th birthday. She'd been living in an assisted living apartment for the last 3 years of her life and her caregivers were all Filipinas and Mexicanas and took wonderful care of her.

My mom was a real corker and I even went to see the director once because I was afraid I was going to be told to find another place for her to live (she was very outspoken) and the director laughed at me and said, yes, my mom was a character, but a beloved character.

The facility had a strict rule that the caregivers could not accept anything from the residents but I went to the director when my mom passed and was adament that I wanted her to relax that rule because my mom really wanted her possesions to be given to her caregivers if they wanted them.

She resisted, I persisted and won. All of her caregivers were alloted an hour in the morning and they all, the one's who weren't working that shift coming in from home, came to my mom's apartment and took absolutely everything, including the custom drapes that my brother had hung over her living room window.

The afternoon before, I made arrangements for her room cleaner, a little Mexican lady barely 4 feet tall, to go to her car where I carried the telivision/camera reading device (Mom had severe macular degeneration) to her car. My mom had promised it to her for her mother who lived in Mexico. The little lady broke down in tears as I lifted it into her hatchback and gave me a great hug.

I felt great because I knew these ladies were taking my mom's possesions to be used by their families and not to be sold at the swap meet and because I felt that it was the last thing that I could do for my mom.

Yes. That was what we thought as well. My parents would be delighted to see all their things appreciated in this way.

LOL. Ian, true. I mean, true but you're right. Let's keep it civil and congratulate the big man in giving his "stuff" to the needy.

That is the most insensitive thing that I have ever read on this forum.

It's been apparent for a while that Hugo930 is PPOT forum's new arsehole. We have them from time to time. He's just the latest. And he'll go away just like the rest of them.

Marcus, this goes beyond being an azzhole, you simply do not say that sort of thing about people. That boy needs a stay on ban island for this...
