You can add some apple sauce instead for the moisture. It makes the cake very moist. I think that the brand is Duncan Hines has a supreme brand that is very very good.

I made this . Black Forest Cake...none will be left over...
Duncan Hines Devils Food Cake mix, box of regular CHOCOLATE Pudding mix, 1/2 to 3/4 cup of Bourbon, 1/4 cup instant coffee, 3/4 cup chopped Walnuts....follow directions Filling Between Layers and Topping: 16 oz bag of Frozen Cherries n a sauce pan, some 1/4 C rum and sugar to taste add some Corn Starch (mixed in some cold water) for thickening...bring to a boil to cook and thicken...cool..save about half? for topping Frosting: Pint and 1/2 Thick Whipping Cream, add in 1/2 to 3/4 Powdered Sugar and whip till thickened/stiff U need to add enough powdered sugar to make it a frosting consistancy.. Filll center of cake with Cherry mixture, Frost cake with Whipped Cream Frosting..make a raised border around top of cake and use the rest of the Cherry mixture for the top center. The coffee and Bourbon make it taste all the more Chocolatie...It does help to have a Piping Bag with nozzle to make the Border around the top center of the caike. My measure are apx as I don't cook with measuring devices for the most part..I just do it. I have meade this numerous times before for guests or as something to bring along....people can't stop eating it...it goes quick..

I also have "Irenes Apple Brandy Cake"
Years ago I was invited over to have dinner at the house of the woman who was the Cook for the author Dean Koonz. She started cooking as a young woman for the Catholic Priests in the Upland, CA Parish. She got the recipe for the cake from a woman named Irene who was 88 years old and was the head cook for the Parish at the time. But I ain't gona tellya the recipe for that one...trade secret... The only thing I will tell ya is that it has Apples and Raisins soaked in Brandy before it hits the mix....and not a crumb is usually left...

I have a NYC Cheese Cake Recipe that is light and fluffy and not the pasty kind...you can add Marsala Wine for a change up in flavor...
Or A Southern Comfort Cake...

My mom has made me chocolate mayonaise cake for my birthday every year for the past 50 years (at least). It's basically chocolate cake made with mayo as the fat component. It's interesting - has a little tang that you usually don't get in cake. You might look into it for something a little different.

North Douglas Chocolate Cake is our family standard for birthdays. The only mod I make to the original recipe is to make it a four layer cake and make 50% more frosting. Google the recipe. Kick Arse!

Try your favorite boxed mix, but use coffee (room temp) instead of water. It enhances the chocolate flavor.
EDIT: And I typed this before checking out the recipe link above - which calls for what? A cup of strong black COFFEE!!!!!
