That song, 'Shrivel Up' is super weird.
I like the background drip-drop rhythm. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/T4oVOFVhV_A" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> KT |
I remember seeing them for the first time on Saturday Night Live, circa 1978.
I couldn't tell if it was a joke or serious. They came out in these rain gear type things and the lead singer laid down and peeled it off like he was shedding his skin, while the band played on. First they played 'satisfaction', then 'we are devo'. I thought it was very cool, but they seemed from another planet. Maybe a joke. |
I'm glad they're still up and kicking. I had heard that they do a lot of composition and writing, not to mention the lead singer still does a lot of work. I heard some of their new stuff on internet radio for the last few weeks.

I listened to some of their new songs on Youtube last night, then got side tracked into KraftWerk "Autobahn" and "Aero Dynamik".
New Devo's "Later is Now" and "Fresh" sound pretty good. I wonder if they are on iTunes? Then there is this: <iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/DVLebnwKAkM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Devo was "all in" until Wippit. Love the first two albums. Big fan from way back and have them on my ipod to this day. Way ahead of their time.
My kids love Uncontrollable Urge. One of my favs: <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/6BMsDRPW4os" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Enough Said!
Following since the SNL show back in 1978 when I was a senior in HS. Hard sell in Tidewater VA at the time, what with Molly Hatchet and Lynyrd Skynyrd getting all the airplay to go with the Yee Hah Hell Yeah southern rock fans that were the majority, but there were probably many factions underground, particularly skaters, as riding had been really off and running for about a couple years at this point (any Pyscho Buds out there?). I was the only kid in my school (Norcom in Portsmouth, or P-Town as we called it as a nod to Z-Town) wearing Vans (blue and red originals), so Devo was a perfect fit. I might still have an energy dome floating around somewhere!

Way ahead of their time.

Best concert I ever saw...Halloween at Radio City Music Hall 1981. The costumes, the weirdness, the treadmills...awesome!

They do the music for my four year old's favorite TV show "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse."
|
Back in 1980, we use to hang out and cut our teeth skateboarding this pool at this abandon house near home. The big high school kids were always there with their ghetto blaster playing Devo. I tell you this, I will be the outcast here, I hate that music. That beat drove me nuts, and still hate it today. That was the start of the 80s music I suppose. As a matter of fact, I didn't listen to music back then but I did like AC/DC

In 2001, Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh and Robert Casale formed a surf band called The Wipeouters. They recorded an album called p'twaaang.
In 1982, Neil Young codirected a film called "Human Highway". Devo is playing "Hey Hey,My My" with Neil playing lead guitar and Booji Boy singing the lead vocals. You can find the clip on you tube. I don't know how to put video here. Maybe someone here can put it up. |
Duty Now
For the Future. We are all DEVO. A buddy and I plan to apply duty now tattoos for our 50th birthday next year....just deciding where to put them. |
