You do a backup before the upgrade. Then your phone data is current on your Mac. If the upgrade fails you can restore to factory then restore the last backup. For Time Machine to play any part in it you'd first had to have backed up your phone, then run a Time Machine backup on your Mac, then the upgrade would have to have toasted either your phone backup or borked the entire box requiring you to restore from Time Machine. |
BTW, if you've managed to get 5 pulled down and you need to do multiple devices from multiple computers/accounts the upgrade is located in Users/YOUR_ACCOUNT/Library/iPhone/iPhone Software Upgrades.
You can just copy it around to where you need it. |
Forgive a stupid question, perhaps: my iphone 4 is jailbroken - can I still upgrade the OS? I realize that will un-jailbreak it, but I really don't take advantage of the jailbroken features. Pretty much all the apps I use are either free or bought, so I don't really care about losing "illegitimate" apps.
|
Yes, you can upgrade as normal. The new OS will wipe out the previous jailbreak and any associated apps or settings. If you receive an error, let me know, I can help. Just upgraded a jailbroke phone today.
What worked best for me was to restore rather than upgrade. Basically the same thing except the program will restore as new then reload the backup. Takes a little longer but worked better than the upgrade option. The new jailbreak should be out soon. |
So far everything working normally.
But battery drain seems to have gone thru the roof. I charge every night before bed and rarely am below 50%, usually about 60-70. Can't remember if I charged last night after the upgrade since the phone was fully charged. Bout 4 o'clock today was down to about 40%. May drain it all the way and do a fresh charge. Anyone else notice a change in battery usage? |
Upgrading now. Taking some time, but that's ok -- I have some time to drink my Kool-Aid (Apple flavored, of course!) :D
-Z PS: Mrs. Z-man was working on her lesson plans on the MAC, and accidentally overlayed a file. No problem -- I went to Time Machine and grabbed the file from last night. Really, really slick. |
Saw it tonight on a buddy's 4. Extremely impressed. So many useful updates and features.

ok
loaded this at work today and have been messing arrond with it. lots of cool stuff - notifications - personal tracking - the cloud stuff, only if you are into that kind of thing battery time is going to go down as wifi is cranking all the time, at least it wants to- |
ok - so I sync'd my photos to iPhoto on the MAC before upgrading, and then I loaded them back to the iPhone -- but the pics on the iPhone all come up blurry - extremely low res -- any ideas?
Edit - never mind -- don't know what happened, but it is ok now. weird. -Z |

my grandmother used to lick the lense, and then wipe them off on her shirt tails.

os5 is running fine on my 4iphone, did the upgrade last night. Only hiccup was I had to relocate my ringtones in itunes, and some of my foldered applications got moved around.
|
My phone updated with no problems. I did my wife's iPhone 4 last night. All of her music vanished from the phone. It is still on the computer so I just have to re-link the folder.
The only frustrating thing I have come across so far is printing. I have a Window computer and a old HP4 laser printer. I had it set up to print any document or email or web page. Now the print command can't find the printer. I will have to figure that one out. It was working fine before. |

Actually, I was still tethered to the MAC, and was looking at the copy of pictures which I moved to the iPhoto folder on the mac. When I disconnected, the pics on the camera roll were fine. |
The upgrade wiped out all of my apps but my 3GS is running better than it ever did before. Fast response and longer battery life so far, but it's just the 1st day with IOS 5...

Are you sure you let it go all the way thru? It reboots several times during the process. |
Yep, I synced prior to the upgrade and it completed. I just downloaded the apps from the phone since I hate iTunes on the PC. So far, so good...
|
I have been trying to activate my new 4S for almost an hour and a half.
Very frustrating. ATT shuts off the old one and can't seem to activate the new one. Internet is full of people complaining. I am giving ATT a couple of weeks to try out this new phone. If I still drop calls routinely then Verizon here I come. |
Got home, my 4S is here, so tell me if this is right:
1. sync my old 4 2. plug in my new 4S and tell iTunes to use the sync from my saved 4 3. sync daughter's 3G 4. plug in the 4 and reset to factory, then sync it to daughter's saved 3G 5. take the 3G to ATT and have them reset it to factory, then add a line and give it to my son 6. whew Right? |
