iOS 5
In the process of updating the 3GS.
The download seems very slow. I guess several million people are also updating... |
Let us know if the 3GS runs slow with iOS 5 and if there is an option to turn off features. We have a 3G (not S) and two 4 (not S) and I don't know which we should upgrade. The 4S is coming Friday, I think.
|
According to Apple, on the 3GS and the 4 can be upgraded.
|
It is claiming 6 hours remaining on the download. 105.7 of 668.8 MB. The servers must be swamped.
|
I will install 5 on my wife's work issued 3GS tonight and report back.
The jailbreak has not been released yet for 5 so my 3GS is off limits to upgrades. My new phone is being delivered Friday with '5' factory installed! |

I would not be surprised if the 3GS is pokey. The 4 should work ok though. Not sure about the chip differences. |
How do I get to the upgrade? App store?

It has been downoading since I started this thread and is barely 1/4th the way done. It now says 7 more hours to finish download... |
Duh! Thanks James!

I'm updating my 4 now but already had one internet interruption and had to start from scratch, 87 minutes remaining.
|
LOL - it's going to suck for you guys if the upgrade goes as smoothly as iOS4 did :) I held off and was one of the few working iPhones in the building that day.
|
I got the download in literally minutes.
Mine farted twice on restoring so I decided not to push it. |
After what I just went through to get a 3g unlocked I don't have much sympathy for you guys. :D
|
Had a little trouble with the update. Had to restart my phone and my computer to get it to work.
So far I do not notice any BIG difference. iMessage is cool and the notifications on the home screen are nice. The only negative about this upgrade is my Rennlist App doesn't work. |
not happy.
lost my flipboard settings and had to reinstall almost all of my apps. |
oddly enough this morning I picked up my Galaxy S2 and have it all set now. So far so good. A friend bricked his iPhone with the iOS5 install so proceed with caution.
|
Giving it a go now. Downloaded ios5 in a few minutes.
|
Error 3194
Upgrade failed during the verification process with apple's servers. They must be slammed. I will try later in the evening. |
IPhone 4 is done. Now doing the MacPro and then comes the iPad. Phone went smoothly.
|
Not bothering with my 3GS at this point. It will be relegated to iPod duties in a few days when my 4S gets here....
|
My attempt was dropped because the servers are too busy. I'll try again later in the week.
|
I've been trying to download it for a few hours now... slow. Everyone on the planet must be downloading it right now...
|
I cant get it, can you order the dvd?
|
Hiccuped on my iPad 1. Had to restart and restore everything. We'll see....
|
I've done two iPads today. The download wasn't the problem, but their authentication servers seems swamped so it fails in the final stages and you have to do the whole back-up/restore dance every time. I reset mine to factory so restore took no time at all, so even with 7 fails between two machines I was still done in a couple of hours, plus 45 minutes to restore the one I'm keeping from a back-up.
People rave about the split keyboard, but I like the ability to share my library and that you can keep working while it syncs (wirelessly, finally). |
15 minutes... today @3:00
|
The files were on my machine last night. I've loaded it this morning. The restore is in progress right now.
|
Doesn't seem very different.
|
So .... best way to backup my iphone data before I upgrade is via itunes?? I am running Time Machine on the MAC that I will use to upgrade my iPhone -- is there a way to attach my iphone data to Time machine?
Sorry - I guess I'm not that Apply savvy yet... -Z |

Will need to do the wifes later so we can check out the unified messaging. |

It's cheap insurance. Think of Time Machine as a snapshot. So if you back up your phone via iTunes it will be captured in the next snapshot. In terms of the upgrade one really has nothing to do with the other though. |

Just did my update. I am posting this from it.
|
|
I installed 5 this morning on my wife's phone and all went smooth. Gave up last night - servers were too busy. I used the backup and restore option rather than upgrade and it worked well.
Still working on discovering the changes. I noticed it added an appointment app that looks interesting, a magazine rack app, iCloud and WiFi syncing. |
I like that the videos are in a location of their own. Not mixed up with the music.
I think the task sharing will be great. I can share a task list with my wife and have a separate list for just me. It has a feature that it will remind me to do things by location. I often think to myself "the next time I am at the parts store I need a (whatever)" and then later go to the store and forget it. Now it will know I am at the store and that I need to get that thing. I know all the privacy folks will think that is nuts but I can't care less if big brother knows I am at the auto parts store. |
Watch the first video in the above mentioned link.
|
So I can give my wife a "task".
