Did you turn off all location services or just some of them?

About half and half.
Turned off the following:
AP Mobile
imdb
Kelly Blue Book
Edmunds
NASA
Yelp

Kept on for the following:
Compass
facebook
fandango
goodle earth, mapquest, and maps
Red Laser
Safari
Tag
Weather channel & Weather app
& some other apps

Also under location services --> systems services, I turned off Location based iAds and compass calibratoin, and traffic.

Also turned off as many push and notifications - for non-important stuff as well.

Well the good thing is that with all the tweaking I've done, I've leared more about the ins and outs of iOS...

Looks like my changes did work -- 12 hours later, and I'm at 92%. Shew.

Now -- anybody know how to add the camera icon to the lock screen?!?

Double click the home button on the lock screen and voila.... itll magically appear next to the slide bar.

jyl 10-26-2011 06:06 PM

Cool. I turned off location services for almost everything, except maps and Siri. I also turned off notification for everything except email, text, and calendar and reminder.

jyl 10-27-2011 06:47 PM

Got my OtterBox Defender case. This thing certainly is protective. Comes with a clip-in holster, Blackberry like. I haven't worn my phone on my belt in years. Anyone do that any more?

red-beard 10-27-2011 06:52 PM

yup

Everyday.

widgeon13 10-28-2011 05:08 AM

I have a Defender and really don't like it, it's too bulky.

jhelgesen 10-28-2011 05:39 AM

I really like my Otterbox impact better than the defender (wife has one of those). Carry it in my back pocket or in my jacket, no issues with a 4 foot drop.

Z-man 10-28-2011 06:08 AM

Wow - what a difference my changes finally made. It's two and a half days since my last charge, and the phone is holding steady at 36%. What a difference...

As far as cases go, I have an Agent 18 Hipstamatic case:

http://assets.hipstaweb.com/product_...jpg?1305871337

The nice thing about this case is the tripod adapter -- if I'm on facetime or watching something on the iphone, I have a mini-tripod that I put the phone on and don't have to worry about propping the phone up. Very slick case, well designed, and it always gets people talking about it - it is, retro in a 70's cheezy sorta way...

jyl 10-28-2011 06:39 AM

I like that Hipstamatic case. Not sure about the defender case, for this bulk I could have an extended-battery case.

jhelgesen 10-28-2011 01:24 PM

Trying the location reminder, but looks like draining battery faster

gprsh924 10-28-2011 02:49 PM

Come on guys, cell phone clipped to the belt? Don't be that guy.

porsche4life 10-28-2011 05:42 PM

I had a defender for my 3GS, but I preferred the commuter, but I got a reflex on the 4s and I really like it.

My mom has one of the case mate barely there cases, not much protection, but it sure is sleek.

campbellcj 10-28-2011 07:30 PM

Timely thread - my battery life on the 4S with iOS5 is horrible - I'm going to try turning-off more location and iCloud services. Everything else is set the same as it was on my 4.

jyl 10-29-2011 06:09 AM

I'm liking the voice keyboard. Speaking your texts or even your forum posts is easy.

Apple confirms bug in iOS 5 causing battery life issues

A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices. We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks...It is also important to note that this problem is not limited to the iPhone 4S, and it is also happening in older generations of iPhones with the latest version of iOS.
I guess the 'small number' of people are those who use location and notification services...

With my tweaks, I'm still getting about 2 days of battery life with moderate use. Still, good to know that it's not just me! :)

Mine was behaving after I killed syncing my work calendar to notification center.

I killed a bunch of dead recurring events and turned notification back on and all was good.

Couple of days ago battery went back in the crapper and sure enough I'd run into another batch of events that was causing calendar to get stuck in a sync loop.

Turned it off and back to normal.

porsche4life 11-03-2011 08:16 AM

After fiddling with location services and notifications mine hasn't been that bad...

MrScott 11-03-2011 12:14 PM

I found time zone setting in location services/system services was constantly using gps. It's been back to normal since I disabled it.

red-beard 11-03-2011 02:18 PM

Is this just 4S? It didn't seem to be affecting my 3S.

I think the issues are more user/usage than hardware based.

red-beard 11-04-2011 03:20 AM

They are announcing security problems with Siri on our local news. Must be pretty bad, or well known, if our local news is covering it.

jyl 11-04-2011 03:41 AM

You can use Siri when the phone is locked. Easy fix, set the appropriate slider to "OFF" in Passcode Lock settings.

Update is out today...

widgeon13 11-11-2011 02:18 AM

Will it improve battery life on the iphone 4 as well as the 4S?

jhelgesen 11-11-2011 04:16 AM

Anyone had issues with Bluetooth headsets sounding muffled?

On a 4 here.

Updated this morning while at 97%.

8 hours later I'm at 91%.

Will see how tommorow goes.

rattlsnak 11-12-2011 08:21 PM

I have a 4S and after the update, Im showing 14 hours, 53 minutes of standby and 4 hours, 12 minutes of usage and I'm at 61 %

ramonesfreak 11-13-2011 04:41 AM

my 4s battery is great, even before the update. after the update, i am not noticing anything different. i have been very careful with my settings and so far have been very impressed compared to my 3Gs

streaming radio or playing modern combat 3 runs that battery down to 50% in a very short time but thats to be expected so i dont do those things unless i have access to a charger

jyl 11-13-2011 06:13 AM

I've held off on the update, as I wasn't having any problems that needed fixing. Would like to hear some more reports from you guys.

Same here. I always wait for the .1 version.

Rot 911 11-18-2011 05:36 AM

Well version 5.0.1 came out and I took the plunge. Installed on iPad 2 and iPhone 3GS. Took about 10 minutes on each one and the install was without drama. So far no degradation in battery time.

campbellcj 11-19-2011 11:44 AM

My battery life on the 4S seems better after the 5.01 update; however, I haven't been able to get the phone to sync to iTunes in 2+ weeks. It seems like an iTunes prob vs the phone but who know. iTunes on Windows is a complete turd and freezes constantly. I've tried WiFi and USB. Ideas?

gr8fl4porsche 11-19-2011 12:12 PM

Maybe try uninstall and reinstall. The current iTunes 64 on Win 7 works better than ever. Actually opens up in a reasonable time these days.

maybe just to ease your mind a bit, ive not had any such trouble and i use windows. i had an iphone 3GS and 4S synched to my windows 7 and XP laptops for several years.

do you reboot your iphone ever? or your computer? is your memory stretched to the limit on your computer? any slow or freeze behavior with itunes on my windows systems usually stems from low memory and space

also, i notice over the years that if you fail to update itunes to the latest version, itunes itself will become problematic after several weeks...could be in my head but ive noticed this for 5 years now with each update

so, update itunes, IOS, reboot computer and iphone and reconnect and see what happens...

widgeon13 11-20-2011 02:52 AM

I did the update and the first day had terrible battery life then did some tweaks and a reboot and getting 48 hours + on a recharge. Very pleased with the battery life on my iphone4. I'm going for the 4S in April when I can upgrade.
