Z, the process you are describing is to delete (uninstall) an app. I'm not sure exactly what you're doing, since AFAIK the mail app cannot be deleted. But anyway it isn't the right thing.
There is no need to "close" an app in iOS and thus not really a way to do it. When you're done with mail, just do something else or hit home once or hit the standby button (top right corner).

You're both right.

He is shutting the app down. Double tap on the home button brings up all running apps and the hold to jiggle gives you a red - not x.

Hold to jiggle on the home screen lets you delete.

But I agree, there is no real reason to shut an app off after every use.

It comes in handy when an app is misbehaving rather than reboot the entire device or if you are really low on battery. Turning off unnecessary apps can buy you some time.

Does anyone else see the irony of this thread?

To save battery life is why I shut things down when I am done with them. I can eek out 2 or more days of life without a recharge.

I read somewhere to delete the email account, reset some network settings, reboot the phone, and reattach the email account to the phone -- I'll try that next.

Sorry, I didn't understand what Z was doing. Now I see.

Thanks for that. FingerPrint from Collobos.com seems to work to enable printing over my iPad via iOS 5/AirPrint to my wireless, (but non-AirPrint authorized) HP network printer.

Apple is quite comical sometimes. I like and use my iPad daily. But the odd hoops you have to jump through, such as enabling something as seemingly simple as printing to a friggin' network connected wireless printer can make it feel like a 2004 time warp.

Update worked well on my iPad2.

Z-man 10-20-2011 08:33 AM

Grrr! Still no auto push of my email. (I am assuming I need to have the account set to 'push' email vs. 'fetch' email -- correct?)

I removed the email account, rebooted my iPhone, and added the email account back. Made sure that notifications are set to 'push.'

Sent test email - and only get the email when I went into the mail app and it connected to checked.

This is frustrating. I guess I have to take a trip to the genius bar now.

gr8fl4porsche 10-20-2011 08:53 AM

Z Man - what exactly are you trying to do? What type of email account.

I set up my Gmail accounts under MS Exchange and they push fine. Pushes calendar and contacts as well.

Yahoo Email. I am trying to get the phone to automatically check for email. If an email arrives in my inbox, I expect the phone to have a red "1" in the upper right corner of my email app icon, just like it did before upgrading to iOS 5. Also - I should be able to see "new mail" & a preivew of this email in the new banner thingy.

My current settings are:

Under: Settings > Notificdations > Mail:

FINALLY FIXED!!! Turned PUSH off, and now it works by using the Fetch function.

Yikes - that was a simple fix. Oh well.

Oracle 10-20-2011 06:26 PM

have you used iMessage? (Seems broken)

After the upgrade have you had an iMessage conversation with another iOS 5 device?
I was testing it with my buddy and noticied that his replies didn't show in the same space, I had to go back then click on the thread and then I could see his message..

very weird, not like the Blackberry messenger for sure...

Can someone please report back if the interaction when using iMessage is broken?

I do, but I'm a turncoat :D

That said, the iPad blows the Samsung tablets out of the water. For phones, I happily can read my GS2. My colleagues 4S, not so much...

jyl 10-20-2011 07:16 PM

iMessage looks like any text conversation, only difference that the bubble is blue.

Oracle 10-20-2011 08:13 PM

Yes is blue, but the replies don't show in a new bubble (or whatever is called) I know there is a new message because the counter upper left shows a "1" so I go back then press on the same thread I was on to read the reply.. that's why I think something is not quite right...

I used the location reminder feature yesterday for the first time. It will allow you to set up an alert that the next time I go to a location the phone knows I am there and reminds me to get the one item I keep forgetting. It was handy.

I have used iMessage and it behaves exactly like regular text messaging except my sent bubbles are blue. The received messages are in grey bubbles. Try quitting and restarting iMessage, and if that fails reboot the device. You should definitely see the replys like before.

jyl 10-21-2011 09:54 AM

Has anyone figured out how to get Siri to read your received texts and take dictation for a response, all hands free? I don't really understand how this feature works.

stomachmonkey 10-22-2011 08:26 AM

Reset network prefs Thursday.

Battery much improved. Almost back to where it was.

Oracle 10-22-2011 09:17 AM

you got it!
I restarted iMessage and works perfectly!

Thanks

IMessage is real handy for the iPad. Now my MIL that does not have a smart phone can send a text right to my wife's iPad.

This is REALLY REALLY Getting frustrating:

- Battery life really, really REALLY Sucks -- even in 'standby' mode (no activity at all), I go from 100% charged to 38% charged in less than 8 hours.

- I switched email to fetch every hour, and it still won't update with new email.

- I keep turning more and more things off, and deleting apps - to no avail. What's the point of having a smartphone if you can't use any smarts because it sucks the battery down quicker than driving a Hummer sucks down gas?

I WANT MY OLD iOS BACK!!!!!

Grrrrr.

Welcome to what the rest of the world has been dealing with battery-wise.

gr8fl4porsche 10-25-2011 06:48 AM

My battery life is poor as well but I can almost get through my entire day on a charge.

I am a heavy user, tons of emails and phone calls all day long. At night it is dead.

Hopefully 5.1 will be out soon with some tweaks for better battery life. I am thinking the notifications are the killer as well as location monitoring.

gr8fl4porsche 10-25-2011 06:49 AM

Not sure why your email isn't working better.

Set up a gmail account and have it check your Yahoo account.

Then set up a MS exchange account for gmail and Push monitoring of your email, calendar and contacts.

Don't forget to backup your contacts first. When gmail sync's, it will erase the phone the first time if you are not careful.

Z-man 10-25-2011 07:03 AM

So I should create another 2 email accounts in order to fix the fetch function? It was working for a short time - a couple of days, before it went away again (without me changing anything email related).

As for the battery life -- I did stick my iphone on top of a couple of speaker docks - was sampling some for my garage. But I doubt that would cause the battery to drain so quickly...

I suppose I'll have to take a trip to the genius bar this week....

Crazy part - I am a technie - I work in IT, and manage a bunch of storage for all types of systems -- mainframe, AIX, Windows/VMWARE, and even, wait for it -- a MAC XSAN environment! It shouldn't be this difficult to fix the stuff I'm having problems with...

-Z-man.

gr8fl4porsche 10-25-2011 07:15 AM

As far as I know, if you want Push notifications, then you have to go the MS Exchange route with gmail being one of the choices if your work does not provide an exchange server.

No idea why the fetch isn't working. Could be a yahoo/ios5 glitch.

RWebb 10-25-2011 12:10 PM

no "upgrade" for me - I'll keep the regular 4 and its OS

jyl 10-25-2011 12:48 PM

My battery life is pretty good after tweaking stuff. Start the day at 100% and I'm 80% now. I turned off push and fetch, just let the mail update manually when I check it. I'm using an ISP and the office Exchange. Turned off notification and location services for apps that I don't care about. Turned wifi off when I'm not at home. Hope you find a solution.

Hugh R 10-25-2011 02:47 PM

I have an iPhone 3GS which I jail broke with the help of gr8flporsche which I use as a wi-fi hot spot for my ipad1. I'm loathe to upload IOS5 for the j/b issue, but any down side to upgrading the iPad1? I only use it for movies and surfing the net.

stomachmonkey 10-25-2011 02:52 PM

So yesterday my battery was back to getting chewed up pretty quick.

Noticed this morning in the Message Center that my Calendar notification was cycling like crazy.

I have hundreds or recurring/constantly changing meetings scheduled.

Watched it cycle for 20 minutes to no end so just turned off Notification for Calendar and battery life has been good today.

11 hours in and still at 81%.

Rot 911 10-25-2011 02:53 PM

No way I am downloading IOS5 until there is at least 5.1 or 5.2.

Moses 10-25-2011 03:06 PM

My iPad2 and iPhone4 are working well with iOS5. No issues at all. Battery life unchanged.

JR Indy 10-25-2011 04:02 PM

iPhone4 and IPad2 running on iOS5 here also, no problems with battery life at all. My phone can run two days without a charge - plenty of use too.

daepp 10-25-2011 04:08 PM

Ok - I WAS a big believer - I drank the Apple juice.

But I gotta ask, are these "advancements" making our lives easier?

Sometimes I am amazed by what I can do with my Ipod/Shuffle/Phone/Pad. Other times, I wonder...

jyl 10-25-2011 04:33 PM

Double edged sword.

On the one hand, we can do do much with this technology. In my pocket I have the world wide web, all my email, all my appointments, instant messages to/from family and friends and coworkers, real-time portfolio and market data, music, books, newspapers, the most powerful HP calculator ever made, a pretty good camera and video recorder, a lightmeter, a level, GPS navigation, decibel meter, on and on - it is 1/2" thick and barely larger than a playing card. I can talk to it in one language snd it will translate to another. Tell it to do things and it does them. Write Chinese. Draw a picture. This was the stuff of science fiction not long ago.

On the other hand, more capabilities means more responsibilities. I'm expected to be always reachable. There's really no such thing as a day off. No matter where I am, I'm supposed to be as on top of data, events, actions as if I were at my desk. We have just one assistant per six or seven of us.

I wouldn't mind being back in, let's say, the 1920s. There were air mail and telegrams. You took weeks to study an issue and make decisions. Right now, a week is a long time; a day or part of a day is more the norm; sometimes minutes. We have vast amounts of data, but it feels like we act on instinct just as much as ever.

Z-man 10-25-2011 07:21 PM

OK - I tweaked it more -- turned email on to fetch only. (was set to manual somehow...)

Turned of basically all of my notifications and locator functions. Will turn them back on as I see fit.

We shall see if the phone will last the night.

Would be nice if they had a readme.txt to document some of the changes and potential pitfalls with the new release... I guess user friendly and battery friendly are two mutually exclusive items in Appledom. (IE: Turn everything on and that way, most consumers will be happy...)

I think one of the things that is happening is a change in consumption/delivery of information.

With CrackBerries it was all about mail. Not a big deal.

These days it's about staying connected thru so many channels it's almost unrealistic to try and stay on top of it manually.

So fetch has turned to push.

Push uses juice.

Blame the youth. We curmudgeons are really not the target audience.

Z-man 10-26-2011 06:06 AM

Good news! My tweaks worked. It was the locator function that I hadn't turned off which I suspect was consumping battery life. (I really don't need the imdb app, the AP Mobile app, and a bunch of other apps to be tracking my location, do I?)

This morning, my phone it at 98%! (Last charge was around 12 midnight)

So I'll start turning on fetches and such as I see the need. I really think this iOS upgrade was pushed out (pun intended) too soon - new features were added, but the drawbacks to those features (ie battery drain) were not considered or properly tested...

-Z-man.
