Z, the process you are describing is to delete (uninstall) an app. I'm not sure exactly what you're doing, since AFAIK the mail app cannot be deleted. But anyway it isn't the right thing.
There is no need to "close" an app in iOS and thus not really a way to do it. When you're done with mail, just do something else or hit home once or hit the standby button (top right corner).

You're both right.

He is shutting the app down. Double tap on the home button brings up all running apps and the hold to jiggle gives you a red - not x.

Hold to jiggle on the home screen lets you delete.

But I agree, there is no real reason to shut an app off after every use.

It comes in handy when an app is misbehaving rather than reboot the entire device or if you are really low on battery. Turning off unnecessary apps can buy you some time.

Does anyone else see the irony of this thread?

To save battery life is why I shut things down when I am done with them. I can eek out 2 or more days of life without a recharge.

I read somewhere to delete the email account, reset some network settings, reboot the phone, and reattach the email account to the phone -- I'll try that next.

Sorry, I didn't understand what Z was doing. Now I see.

Thanks for that. FingerPrint from Collobos.com seems to work to enable printing over my iPad via iOS 5/AirPrint to my wireless, (but non-AirPrint authorized) HP network printer.

Apple is quite comical sometimes. I like and use my iPad daily. But the odd hoops you have to jump through, such as enabling something as seemingly simple as printing to a friggin' network connected wireless printer can make it feel like a 2004 time warp.

Update worked well on my iPad2.

Z-man 10-20-2011 08:33 AM

Grrr! Still no auto push of my email. (I am assuming I need to have the account set to 'push' email vs. 'fetch' email -- correct?)

I removed the email account, rebooted my iPhone, and added the email account back. Made sure that notifications are set to 'push.'

Sent test email - and only get the email when I went into the mail app and it connected to checked.

This is frustrating. I guess I have to take a trip to the genius bar now.

Z Man - what exactly are you trying to do? What type of email account.

I set up my Gmail accounts under MS Exchange and they push fine. Pushes calendar and contacts as well.

That's the Council of Geniuses.

Yahoo Email. I am trying to get the phone to automatically check for email. If an email arrives in my inbox, I expect the phone to have a red "1" in the upper right corner of my email app icon, just like it did before upgrading to iOS 5. Also - I should be able to see "new mail" & a preivew of this email in the new banner thingy.

My current settings are:

Under: Settings > Notificdations > Mail:
Notification Center - ON
Show 5 unread items
Alert Tyle: Banner
Badge App Ion - ON
Show Preview - ON
view in Lock Screen - ON

Under: Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Yahoo!:

Authentication > (not available)
Server port: 465
Advanced:

Under: Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data:
Fetch New Data: Push: ON
(Fetch: Every 30 Minutes)

Show 50 Recent Messages

FINALLY FIXED!!! Turned PUSH off, and now it works by using the Fetch function.

Yikes - that was a simple fix. Oh well.

have you used iMessage? (Seems broken)

After the upgrade have you had an iMessage conversation with another iOS 5 device?
I was testing it with my buddy and noticied that his replies didn't show in the same space, I had to go back then click on the thread and then I could see his message..

very weird, not like the Blackberry messenger for sure...

Can someone please report back if the interaction when using iMessage is broken?

I do, but I'm a turncoat :D

That said, the iPad blows the Samsung tablets out of the water. For phones, I happily can read my GS2. My colleagues 4S, not so much...

jyl 10-20-2011 07:16 PM

iMessage looks like any text conversation, only difference that the bubble is blue.

Oracle 10-20-2011 08:13 PM

Yes is blue, but the replies don't show in a new bubble (or whatever is called) I know there is a new message because the counter upper left shows a "1" so I go back then press on the same thread I was on to read the reply.. that's why I think something is not quite right...

I used the location reminder feature yesterday for the first time. It will allow you to set up an alert that the next time I go to a location the phone knows I am there and reminds me to get the one item I keep forgetting. It was handy.

I have used iMessage and it behaves exactly like regular text messaging except my sent bubbles are blue. The received messages are in grey bubbles. Try quitting and restarting iMessage, and if that fails reboot the device. You should definitely see the replys like before.

jyl 10-21-2011 09:54 AM

Has anyone figured out how to get Siri to read your received texts and take dictation for a response, all hands free? I don't really understand how this feature works.

stomachmonkey 10-22-2011 08:26 AM

Reset network prefs Thursday.

Battery much improved. Almost back to where it was.
