Lightbulb Auto Trader Porsche classifieds from the 90's....

Going through some of my "saved" documents, I found this 2 page collection of Auto Trader ads that I cut out and pasted on notebook paper adding a few comments along the way. I think I sent it to a girl I was dating at the time....hence the remarks that reflect.

I ended up buying my first 911 from just such an Auto Trader ad in 1998. An '81 SC Targa, located in Miami for $10.5K. Buddy of mine drove me down there to do the transaction and I drove her home.

No PPI.....just looked at the ad, called and talked to the seller, and that's it.

Autotrader is where my 73.5 was found in 1988, about 1 1/2 hours away. I paid 6,000. I came back a 4 days later and with a U-Haul trailer.
It was original and ran well. It did have a bit of rust in the suspension pan and rockers, but looked good. All original except the radio and speakers.

I remember:
"Every 911 is a $20,000 911."

Buy a nice one for 20
Buy at 15, it will cost 5 to make right.
Bargain fixer for 10, it will cost another 10.

There has been a LOT more dollars printed since then.

Very true as I ended up replacing the cylinder head studs on mine and some other stuff while the engine was out.

Loved the Auto Traders from back in the day. Every blue color break room had a few on the table.

The best part was that nothing was in any particular order, so browsing through let you find a car you might not have had on your radar. Not like today with “laser” focused searches. Although I did feel like I was reliving the old days when I did a search on Craigslist with manual transmission as my search word a few weeks ago.

That was my first one. I still have it, but hasn't run in a long time. Currently under restoration....

Love the Auto Trader, I remember going every Thursday, started at 13 to pick it up and looked through it for days dreaming of my first car..

That was 46 years ago 😀

This is awesome.
I wish I kept all my old AutoTraders from back in the day.

I didn’t become a porsche owner until 2003 but I always dreamed of having one and started getting more serious about buying one in the late 90’s. I remember walking across a grocery store parking lot, seeing a mid 70’s 911 drive by and telling my wife I could pick one of those up for about $7k. Another couple was within ear shot and I overheard them comment, “he thinks he can buy a porsche for $7k!”

Sitting on the throne has never been the same without an Autotrader.

Whatever happened to Recycler magazine? It seems to have been replaced by Craigslist.
