Has Porsche ever sold a 24 valve 3.0 liter flat 6?

I was hanging out over barbecue grills with the neighbor, and we were talking cars. Tim owns an '87 635CSI, and wants to get rid of it, he now owns a Hyundai Genesis 4.6.

[OMG is that car fast! I bet my 928S2 would show its tail-lights to that car, but just barely-! What is going on, a full sized Hyundai four-door that can run with Porsche's?

-And do it for $33k brand new?]

The question came up when I was talking about the Subaru Outback that I keep up in Memphis as an "airport car", or simple work vehicle. It has a 3.0 liter 24 valve flat 6 engine; Instantly Tim pointed out that since Porsche went to water-cooling on their flat 6 engines, they have steadfastly avoided the 3.0 liter displacement. I was like "What?" Yes, I think that is true. The Boxster had a 2.5 liter engine originally, and then 2.7 and 3.2. The 911 had a 3.4, then a 3.6, 3.8....and now a 4.0. I don't think Porsche ever actually sold the water cooled flat six with 3.0 liters of displacement, which is strange, because 3.0 liters was the threshold where higher taxation takes place in many countries, so most cars that are called "3.0" are actually 2995 cc, or something like that.

Hmm....

N!

959 was close at 2.8L.. but no, not 3.0L

The base cayman/boxster is currently a 2.9L motor, but we all know caymans aren't real Porsche's

Cars today have, can have, nutty power. That 4.6 is rated 375 HP and 0-60 5.5 sec.

Wrapped in an ugly shell, but . . .

Closest thing to a 3.0 liter watercooled 24 valve flat 6 is in the Cayman.
(Technically it's a 2.9 (2.893 l) but then the 911 SC 3.0 also is a 2.994 liter....)

I have an 11 year old Porsche that has only 280 (slightly modified) horses and can do that same 0-60 in 4.9 to 5 flat. And just like that Hyundai, I drive it to work every day in traffic.

And it isn't wrapped in that ugly shell.

4.6L Genesis is $45K not $33K, the new R-Spec 5.0L Genesis is $48K and is 429hp, enough to wave bye-bye to most 928s

BAM! Lubey nails it.

Every day that the Hyundai is driven, it is worth less and less (where as the 80's 911 that appears so often in our signature lines is holdling/gaining value even as the miles and age increase). A Hyundai is an appliance. Quite a competant appliance, but nothing more. If you are in a Hyundai outside of warranty, you're going to be very disappointed with the high cost of replacement parts and the lack of cross-over parts in a junk yard. Their models are quite specific, unlike older 911's. Surprisingly complicated, expensive parts, limited availability - not a "keeper."

Buy it used, drive it into the dirt, kick it to the curb like last week's trash.

His Genesis has 385 hp [the same as an '85 Ferrari Testarossa...] and he talked the dealer down to $33k.

Holy ben-wa balls Batman!

[Yeah, it is still a Hyundai, and as such a disposable car. Nobody will care about it 10 years from now, that's the test.]

-The Ford Taurus SHO was 3.0 liters. The 911SC was for years a 3.0 liter car. The Toyota Supra Mk4 was 3.0 liters, and all of them make 800 hp, along with a whole host of Nissan 300ZX's from the 1990's.

Porsche has steadfastly stayed away from the 3.0 as of late.

Hmmm-

N!

Whats so magical about the 3.0 to you normy? Its just a displacement, and they've been making bigger motors as of late, much bigger...

Oh and the 968 was a 3.0 4banger....

Read my original post. There is nothing about 3.0 that means anything to me, but my neighbor's thoughts are interesting; Since they've gone to water cooling on the flat 6 they have steadfastly avoided this exact engine size. I don't know, but for some reason it just seems strange, since for ages many cars were just shy of 3.0 liters.

What about the Pikes Peak car which spanked many of the competitors?

Why are they so steadfastly "avoiding' it, according to you?
The 3.0 SC was a 2994 cc engine, does that mean they were steadfastly avoiding to make it a 2995 cc??
They never made a 1684,65 cc either, were they steadfastly 'avoiding' that too??...
They just didn't make a 3.0 liter engine for a while, so what.
They didn't avoid it, they just had other ideas and plans and went with those.

Agreed..but at least the company is moving in the right direction, people do not scoff at them like in the '80s and '90s. I believe they have a bright future.
