Not too surprising, since soil can build up significantly over the centuries. When we excavated our foundation, we discovered evidence of a house foundation 3 feet down. The house had probably been destroyed just over two hundred years before.

Haven't you guys read "Aku-Aku"? I believe there had been excavations of some of the figures even back prior to the publication of that book which showed the bodies in addition to the more-well-known heads.

Wow - I had no idea - thanks for the news SM!

BTW.....I used these for a logo a few years back for new shirts for my landscaping business.....my concept - no phone numbers or text to clutter up the branding....worked pretty good. I don't advertise anyway - too many referrals.

I wonder if the bodies were covered by the soil that eroded after all of the trees that were used as lumber to roll the heads from the quarry to their locations? I understand that when the trees were all cut down, the formerly rich soil eroded and left the island with too little good soil to grow food...

Yeah, it's an odd story.

Years ago, I met a guy from Easter Island and he told me a bunch of stuff about the place. Very interesting!

I watched a show on TV (so it had to be true, right?) that said rats were brought the island accidental-like and the rats ate the nuts so the trees died off and that's what happened.
I wasn't there .........

Went there on vacation in December 1999, spent 5 days on island - fantastic place, one of the best vacations we've been on. Standing on the side of the volcano among all of the moai in various states of completion gives you goosebumps.
