I'm sure. We are both leading busy lives, he goes to school on the other side of the state, usually when he is in town I am off somewhere else. |

When to write them off?
When you loan them money and they don't pay you back when they said they would. Perhaps the lines between aquaintance, friend, and good friend need to be cleared up. Jim

I guess I'm blessed in a way, several thousand people owe me money (I'm a pawnbroker) but I've never been hit on by a relative or in-law. I hope it's not just because I'm several hundred miles from the closest one.

Interesting. I told my wife that her "friend" was using her for years. Friend flipped out and my wife hasn't seen or spoken to her for years. No loss. Very one sided.
I have had two different friends that went through bad times. One, had his dad die and the other had a divorce / mid-life crisis or something. I gave both plenty of room and stayed away from them because I didn't like them at the time. Today? They have healed up. I just told myself that I didn't care for them at the time and hoped things might change. They did. I made an extra effort with the one whose father was dying. It was very one sided for a while but I assumed that he wasn't able to extend the effort. It paid off. I expect to ask him to be the guardian of my kids in the near future. Good luck. Friends are precious. (fortunately the OP didn't lose a friend) Larry |

I rather have 1 good friend who comes through and i can trust, then 1 good friend and a flake.
Drop it like it's hot. It's not like you have to do anything... Just stop calling him, if he calls, politely decline.. in the end, it's not worth your time

What would you have done?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ . I would have taken his 1st phone call to ask him what happened. Whether or not I believed his statement, I would have expressed my disappointment & surprise...with great detail. Depending on his response/reaction to my statement, I would tell him that we all have our neurosis in this life and that I have mine, too. Given that, I only have room in my life for folks who are willing to talk about their neurosis. If he is not willing to come clean, then I would say that I will not interfere with his life plan and that I will now leave him to his own fate. His own life is his punishment. If he is willing to talk about his neurosis, then he just might be my NEW friend. . Note: I'm too old to hang out with gamers...male or female.
