This is the only (original) Yellowbird.

The rest are CTR conversions.

+1

On the white car at the top, would have to get rid of the huge "Ruf" decals on the hood and doors and the '"Yellow Bird" CTR' decals on the doors. Yeah, it should be yellow if it says "yellow bird" on the doors.

I'm not sure I want the extra complexity/cost of the AWD system in mine. I'm sure it would be better for me, but I'd rather have rwd only thanks.

If I may, the rest might be CTR's (RUF VIN), CTR conversions (non RUF VIN), clones and look a likes.

The one I listed is a CTR and whilst it is not the original Yellow Bird it is a real CTR. A lightweight one too!

My opinion on Steve's car is that it might have a CTR spec engine but it is not based on one of the original unnumbered 89 tubs it is not a CTR.

Ruf is a tuner so there are many versions of Ruf cars out there.

Excellent summary.

kaisen 11-04-2011 08:13 AM

Bad paintwork
Horrible tire choice (for a RUF)
Bad description
Cheesy graphics

This guy didn't deserve to own a RUF

BTW, RUF cars come with RUF VINS and this car has a Porsche VIN
It's a 'real' RUF in the sense that it was built at the RUF factory, but not a RUF in that it is not a RUF car, it is a Porsche that was converted by RUF

When the Beddors had it, this was the schiznit
They have amazing cars
I used to see their short wheelbase Gruppe B Audi Quattro here in Minneapolis from time to time back in the day. What a beast!

You know they had 4 of those, right?

Yes, and a bunch of other very cool hardware
But the one I'm referring to was a Tornado Red shorty they would drive almost daily

It was built around 4 years after the SC production ended, and Ruf normally used a fresh body in white from Porsche when building a car from scratch, so most likely it wasn't an SC tub. It had the '86-on dash structure, for instance, and I doubt they would have gone to the trouble to change a feature like that, given that the car wasn't fitted with A/C.

Who knows, though? Since it was essentially a prototype that would never be sold to the public, maybe they used something they just ahd laying around. The point was that a Carrera tub (or an SC tub, which was essentially the same thing) bears no relation to a 964 tub.

I'm about 99% certain that it was built on an '87 3.2L body.

I saw a '91 965 "Yellowbird" at the TExas Mile two weekends ago: here's a few pictures.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320421063.jpg

Actually, the original CTR engine was rated at 469 hp. This one has a lot more than that... I'd wager it was really closer to a CTR2 engine, since it has a bit more displacement than a CTR. Given that the car was converted, I'd bet that the engine started out as a 964 3.6. Maybe it was the original engine from that chassis.

JR, even more reason for it to be something other than a CTR.

We spoke about those cars when I visited Ruf in the 90's but I cannot recall all the details.

javadog 11-04-2011 09:23 AM

I looked at buying a Ruf car in the late '80's. I was more interested in a BTR, since Ruf was able to get them certified for the US. A CTR wasn't ever certified, although a guy managed to import one into Canada, if I remember correctly. The BTR was a slower car, although a lot of the things that were used on a CTR could be ordered on a BTR. I still have a couple of the brochures.

This car has nothing, nothing, nothing in common with a CTR. Why call it that?

The Beddors should know better, so maybe they have no connection with the sale.

I think that this car left their hands many years ago but I don't keep up. They are my cousins and AFAIK were the biggest RUF customers in the world for a long time. When Frank Jr. turned 80, they sold-off his remaining cars. He was very active with motorsports well into his 70s, as well as many other rigorous activities. He get into the Guinness book of world records in the 1950s for waterskiing the entire length of the Mississippi. His son, Frank III, was freestyle (snow) skiing champion of the world in the '70s and they got involved in motorsports originally when Audi sponsored them as pro skiers. I remember when Frank had the red Audi sport Q in L.A. back in the early '80s.

As a family they tend to do nothing half-assed so the car/track hobby morphed into a long relationship w/ RUF and the rest is history. I watched Steve pass a 962 on the straight @ Fontana a few years ago during the CA. festival of speed in his 964-based RUF car. I thought it was a CTR but after reading this thread I'm not so sure that I know my RUF terminology anymore. I have gotten to meet Alois Ruf with Steve, though, what a nice guy.

Here's a scanner (and printer/copier) for $38 you can pick up at WalMart in Tulsa

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Canon-Computer-Systems-Inkjet-Photo-All-In-One/15167232

I'm sure I/we can chip in, or I can call it an early Christmas present :D

daepp 11-04-2011 09:44 AM

Obviously the car works wonderfully, but how do those intercoolers get any airflow?

Have you got a digital camera or a phone with a camera built in?
