They've owned a bunch of Ruf cars. Steve was probably the most famous of the kids and his favorite car, or at least the one he seems to use the most, was a yellow CTR2 Sport.

I think he's ended his association with Ruf. I've seen several of their cars up for sale in the last 10 years. I'd be curious to know if they have any left.

Well, they don't get a lot...

A funny story related to the first CTR is that the NACA ducts on the fenders, intended to feed air to the intercoolers, didn't quite work the way Alois thought they would. The intercoolers were mounted in a different way in the customer cars. Below is a picture of the original idea:

I wonder where they expected the air to exit?

Into the engine cooling fan, then out under the car. It's the same way any 930 intercooler works, in principle, although those work a little better.

Another view of an intercooler in the first CTR:

I made a post about this car in the 930 forum and some people mentioned Steve being the original owner. I had never heard of him so I Googled his name and found a post on the 911 forum from him saying he was leaving motorsports and had ended his relationship with RUF. I would assume that is when the cars were sold off.

Maybe speeder can add some info. If I had a cousin with those cars they would have to chase me off!

Did you take those pics the same place I did in Dallas?

daepp 11-04-2011 10:58 AM

Of course - how stupid of me. I was thinking - hey, the engine compartment is sealed. Forgot about that big spinning sucking fan!

Unfortunately, I don't see them much and last talked to Steve when his dad died a couple years ago. I have 35 first cousins and about 100(?) second cousins, including the Beddors. They are nice people and I enjoy the limited time we spend together. Steve's dad, Frank Jr., was a really fun guy to the end. He was my dad's first cousin and they spent a lot of time together growing up. That was a tight extended family in those days. :)

Probably, assuming you took yours at the Ruf dealer...

Alois sent the car over to the US 5 or 6 years ago. It spent a little time on the west coast, where some journos got to drive it for a few new magazine articles about it, and it made a stop at the Ruf dealer for a little while. I made sure to pay it a visit...

Yup, that was it, over in Addison. I remember they were doing a conversion on Axl Rose's car at that time around back.

Lose the graphics and I could probably handle owning it, Yellowbird or not.

The purists would say, No Ruf Vin, No Ruf car. period !

enzo1 11-07-2011 07:49 PM

Bah! If I bought an '88 Carrera today, and paid Ruf to turn it into a "yellowbird-style" CTR, I wouldn't care if a purist thought it was a real Ruf CTR or not. They could ponder that as they pondered my tail lights.

Guess it didn't meet reserve during the auction--this car just popped up in the classifieds with a 129K asking price.

dienstuhr 11-30-2011 02:10 PM

java's right, that ain't no yellabird. it's a 964.

I saved the 12 minute vid of the yellowbird tearing up the 'ring, hanging out the rear and smoking the tires in a sweeper at 80.

Once in a while I'll pull it up and dream .............
