6.3 amg

No, I'm not in the market to buy one. But I was sitting at a light tonight on the way home, and next to me was a Mercedes-Benz CL63 with the "6.3" badge on the front quarterpanel. And I got to thinking (it was a long light) about something I read in a recent car mag--something about how the motor actually displaces 6.2 liters (knew that) but that for marketing reasons, MB calls it a 6.3 because it sounds better when said with "AMG." 6.3 AMG.

Is that true? "6.3" was chosen because it sounds better when said with "AMG?" Any MB insiders (Z-man?) know if this is true?

I had always assumed (apparently incorrectly) that "6.3" was chosen to tie it in with the legendary 6.3 motor from the late-60's and early-70's that powered the 600 limousine and then the 300SEL 6.3 (my favorite Mercedes of all-time) from '69-'71.

The tie to the legendary 6.3 is the explanation Clarkson gave when test driving the C63 back when it was introduced. It made a semi-decent amount of sense.

Besides, if they were that worried about how it sounds, why would that have made an R350 CDI 4Matic...... doesn't exactly roll of the tongue.

Why would it cost that much to maintain?? Maybe $6k worth of fuel and oil if you drove it enough, but they are not known as finicky engines.

If you drive it like Clarkson did around the track, you'd be lucky to only spend 6k on tires in a year....

Awesome cars. Definitely try one out sometime if you get the chance. Wow!

6.9 = a good time interrupted by a period.

MB's don't have problems that result in high annual maintenance costs. Stupid electrical issues but those are usually one time fixes.

Have to agree. MBs are fantastic durability-wise. However they do (like any car) require regular service and "little things" like plug and oil and filter changes can be shockingly expensive. I got a quote for changing the plus & wires on my SLK at the dealership - almost $800. Ahh no thanks. Bought the OE wires and plugs and did it myself in an afternoon. Most MB owners won't do that however.

I had the same experience with the wagon. Plugs and coil packs, they wanted nearrly $1500. Bought the parts for $400 and did it in an afternoon.

I'm in the market for a new car and drove a C63 last night. Smooth, powerful, comfortable. I'm going to avoid the dealership for awhile or else I may not be able to resist.

Any owners of one of these on the board? How are they to live with on a daily basis?

Didn't I read that there's a class action lawsuit against MB for problems relating to this engine?
I think it has to due with valve/cam wear. From what the article said this is the first AMG eng built by the main eng plant instead of AMG

They did the same thing with the C55. It's really a 5.4 liter. But who cares.. I'm not crazy about the newer C class styling. I still like the previous design more. The sound of the 6.3 is awesome. Can't imagine the power.

If a (x)63 w/ a 6.2L engine weirds you out, don't look too close at the 2012 E63...just enjoy it for what it is...especially if you're considering an iridium silver estate w/ the performance package and LSD...and carbon ceramic brakes! Also, please give me a call in 4 years when it's lost half to 2/3's of its sticker price as I will fully consider relieving you of this burden

I've owned a couple 6.9s

By modern standards, they are nothing special. But they were of a different era, and were pretty special cars. My first was a Swedish diplomatic car originally and had several unique features.

But today there are front wheel drive Hyundais that outperform it in every measure, including luxury.
