A message to cops...

Wish i had not read that drivel, but i have to agree somethat with the rant on tasers. They can be deadly force in the wrong circumstances.

I get along with most cops. Just people doing a job.

You know, it is pretty easy to AVOID being tasered, just saying....

I have met both types, A-Holes & cool ones, had drinks & shot pool with a few buddies who wear a Badge that I'm proud to call Friends..
Only once I have had a A-hole one, on a Sat, we just rented a 9Ksqf shop in the industrial near my office, I had the doors open, was parking some cars and setting up some tools, the phone and power weren't turned on yet (that was scheduled for the following Monday). I walk out of my office, into the shop and a short cop comes around the corner, gun drawn
Ask me what I'm doing, I tell him, we just rented the space and I'm setting up shop, told him to call Pat (the Property manager, who has been there since the 80s, most of the local Police know who she is) he says he doesn't know who she is and that I set off the alarm (remember, no POWER or PHONES) I point out to him that the power hasn't been turned on and that he must be at the wrong location, offer to show him my paper work & around the shop since I had a few Porsches in there. He radios in, and as we walk outside, another cop pulls up, verifiesmy story, and the response of the short cop was

Lucky that I didn't shoot you

WTF, I was in my own building, that he entered, without invite or permission & I'm lucky he didn't shoot me
I said, yea, my business partners would be pretty pissed had you shot me in OUR building, so would my family..
A buddy of mine use to own a little Jazz Pub, his Brother is a local cop and many of them would hang out there, so I told them about it, they laughed, knew him and just said he was an A-hole, and that was that..
I have also hung out with Fireman Vinny, another great guy to drink & hang out with, just saying..

Would your friends have done something about Shorty asshat cop, or would have they just let it go?

And before you answer, recall they know he is a asshat, and they haven't done anything about him so far have they?

But don't you get peeved when you see some newbie enjoying his badge a little too much putting the public offside? I assume you senior guys pull such guys into line behind the scenes, but if Joe Public's only interaction with the cops is unpleasent, then he perceives that every interaction is unpleasent.

Cops need trust from the public to do their work. It worries me when that trust is eroded.

Firstly, thanks for what you do. Many things are expected of police that I would loathe doing, and for what you do, you're vastly underpaid.

Most Police offciers know that the public trust in us is fragile. We cringe when we hear of one of us doing something stupid or worse. Like every other profession we hire from the human race, so there will always be mistakes.
New and all police officers are entrusted with a lot of responsibility and power. Wisdom and experience are passed on from the senior to junior officers, whether or not it takes is up to each individual. Each shift many important decisions are made, often within seconds. Do I arrest that person? What level of force do I use to protect myself or others? It is impossible to go through a career making those fast decisions and not make mistakes. I think all police officers are cognizant of the fact that if the mistake is a big one it will cost you a career and possibly jail.
I would guess that the only interaction people here have with the police is a traffic stop, which probably ends up in a ticket, not fun. But can you imagine what our roads would be like without traffic enforcement. Impaired drivers, wreckless speeding, unsafe vehilces, etc..
Please remember when you hear someone else tell there story of their police encounter that there are two sides to the tale, and you are only getting one.
There is so much to say on this topic that I can't write it all here, too bad we couldn't discuss it over a few beers.
