If you have Friday off (Veteran's Day), what are you going to do?

I have this Friday off for Veteran's Day (IT contractor at a banking client), so I think I'll head to the local pistol range with my Colt 1903 Hammerless and the Walther PP and do a little shooting. Saturday AM, I'm taking my almost-blind friend to a gun show in Maumee, OH, it will be a gun-themed weekend!

I think I'll wear my flight jacket with my Fleet Marine Force badge that "Seahawk"(Paul) was kind enough to send to me!

Being a Veteran, I have NEVER had a job that gave me the day off. I know a lot of people and friends who never served, never would serve, but enjoy a nice holiday that doesn't even remotely involve paying respects to those who have served/ given their life for our freedoms.

With the increase in Veterans that we will see in the near future, I think the POTUS should make it mandatory/ benefit that anyone who serves in the military receives Veterans Day off for life. Just as a "thank you" for their service. It's the least we can do. Thanks for your service Art and all Veterans on the BBS. Mini-rant over....

azasadny 11-07-2011 06:12 PM

Craigster,
Thank to you and all of the other veterans who went before and after me... I have rarely ever had this "holiday" off, but when I do, I try to do something memorable. I'll stop by the local veteran's memorial in my town, visit the local coffee shop, then shoot some paper targets and listen to music while I clean the pistols. I will catch myself remembering those that I know who didn't come home or who came back wounded. Thanks again!!

Sarc 11-07-2011 06:12 PM

I don't, but I'll start the day off by giving my dad a call to thank him (USAF 67-71).
Come to think of it, now that he's newly retired, maybe I'll wait until lunch to thank him.

And of course...thanks to all the verterans on here!

BTW, I'll have to shoot one of the M1911A1's, too!!

I'm taking friday off. We have school, but I will be on a Scuba diving trip with my class.... Doing rescue scenarios in Perch Lake, NM....

Always a melancholy day for me. My father was career Air Force, passed 20 years ago on November 17th. I was on active duty for a few years and have many career military friends especially from the Vietnam era. I interviewed for college on Veterans Day and ended up attending that school. It happened to be a military institution so I guess I could say the military has played a pretty significant role in my life for the better part of forty years.

This Friday I will reflect and remember.

jyl 11-07-2011 07:52 PM

Veteran's Day is not observed by the markets, so I will be at work hoping that one of my companies announces that they will cease observing Veterans' Day so that their profits will rise and their stock goes up. If they throw in a layoff of some veterans, all the better, more profit, yum. There's no sentiment in money. Do I sound sour?

chocolatelab 11-07-2011 07:57 PM

I own my own business. My employees get the day off, but I'll be working.

drcoastline 11-07-2011 08:09 PM

It's my birthday. I have had off on my birthday my whole life. I was about 6 when I realized why we didn't have school. I have always made time in my day to spend a little time remembering once I found out I had uncles in WWII. This year, I will be helping my daughter with her school project. The project revolves around this flag.

I'm planning on camping in Yucaipa, CA but it's supposed to rain, so I may pass. USMC, 1971-73

HHI944 11-07-2011 08:49 PM

Business as usual, but I'll take some time out for a scotch and cigar on the beach and a little reflection. I'm determined to do enough living for myself and a few of my buddies not afforded the opportunity.

I think only those who have been in the services should get the day off. In everyday life, I've never heard anyone else refer to it as a day of thanks and commemoration for the military. Sure the shirts in the government and the media pay lip service to it, but to most people it's just a day off.

Jrboulder 11-07-2011 09:39 PM

I'm giving some nice 944 and 914 parts to some vets for free.

I am not a vet but I've been saying this same thing for years.

A930Rocket 11-07-2011 10:17 PM

Not a vet (bad choice on my part), but I don't recall having it off at any time.

Thanks for serving guys!

mossguy 11-07-2011 10:59 PM

I'll fly the flag at home, maybe have breakfast on base, and attend the ceremony. (Army '57-'84)

Hard-Deck 11-08-2011 03:46 AM

I'm going to school with my Daughter as they have a nice celebration each year. I'll call my Dad and thank him for serving in WWII. Then I will take my family to lunch and thank them for supporting me while serving. After that I'll wrench on my Moto Morini

Groesbeck Hurricane 11-08-2011 04:03 AM

I cannot stand companies that do not, at a minimum, give Veteran's Day off to Veterans!! Pet peeve of mine!

I will call my Mother and thank her for her service in WW II, Father-in-Law and thank him for his service in Vietnam, send a note to my Cousin thanking him for his service in several theaters of war/police actions/peacekeeping forces, and wish I could make the trip to my dad's grave to thank him at graveside (it has been too many years since I did that).

I will most likely do some insulating of the attic in-between.

Skytrooper 11-08-2011 04:58 AM

As a freshly (Jan '11) retired 2 service veteran (31 years), I will ponder the day quietly thinking about friends who passed long before their time. I will raise a glass to their memory and to thank those still serving. A good cigar would be mandatory.

God bless the U.S.A

Rot 911 11-08-2011 06:15 AM

I'll be working.

Thanks, guys!

BeyGon 11-08-2011 07:12 AM

For what ever reason, where I have worked, I have always had the day off, I usually talk to a few friends around the country that were in VN at the same time as me, didn't see them there, they were Army, I was USMC, but we still have the same stories.

azasadny 11-08-2011 05:47 PM

I'm taking my 85 year-old buddy to Applebee's for lunch on Friday. They provide free lunches to veterans and he'll really enjoy it!

pwd72s 11-08-2011 06:00 PM

Every day is a holiday for me. On this veteran's day, I'll do pretty much what I always do...be darned glad that this guy on the left and his buddies saw to it that I didn't have to learn German!

Dunno who that guy in the suit is....:D

I don't have Friday off. Wish I did. I would make about ten dozen cookies and take them down to the VA Domicilary.

I make awesome cookies, it would be cool to share.

That is exactly the policy we had in our business. Only actual vets or the spouse of a vet. got the day off. And oddly enough, those that had to work that day never really complained (openly anyway).

syncroid 11-08-2011 06:39 PM

I'll be doing what I do most every Friday with one exception. Exception being; Thanking those that have given us the freedom to live here in the great USA the way we do.
My regular Fridays are always days off. (4 day work week)
I usually go for a 4.5 mile hike with my wife followed up with coffee and catch up time while our girlie is at school. ;) Its the only day that I get to take my girl to school too. I love that!

nostatic 11-08-2011 06:47 PM

I don't have the day off. I'll be at work trying to get our new dismounted counter-IED training system prepped for deployment at Quantico in Dec. We should have our rough cuts of video done tomorrow and we'll be testing our latest game/practice environment builds. Gonna be a busy next couple of weeks.

If we weren't knee-deep in production I'd take the day off and play gigs at the VA Hospital. Unfortunately I had to sub those out but I'll be there for some xmas shows.

kid sister komes for diner, we have st-martin's day here as well, old folklore, says he brings toys for the kids.. It's a bit like what you guys have with x-mas, but just for the kids. As i'm her godfather, she comes round to see what he brought..

And i'll probably go downtown Ypres , Ypres will be packed with Brits for the WW1 ceremonies..
crowds grow larger every year... it's crazy.. in the seventies and 80'ies the buglers often played weeks withou a single person to hear it, now it's jam packed every day, and 11-11 it's times 50 busy..

Canada - Remembrance Day

Here in Canada it is called Remembrance Day - National holiday for everyone.

I will be out of town but I would normally be marching with our veterans down main street to the cenotaph. The crowd that comes out is always terrific - excellent support for our veterans.

DonDavis 11-09-2011 09:02 AM

I have the day off. I like to visit Bolin Park in downtown Phx with my son. This year, I hope my daughter can join, too. Maybe take in part of a parade, throw the baseball around, go for a nice run, then hoist a cold brew, bump the table top for those fallen and thank the Lord for the blessing of life.

well, I don't have the day off, but I took today off to go to the Veteran's Day ceremony at the VA in Lake City to take a friend's uniform to him, since he didn't get to come home, and his Son's live in KY. If you are off, go to the Veteran's Day ceremony in your city of a local VA, it was a very moving experience..

The only thing I'm doing tomorrow is flying the flag, but this morning we had a large catered breakfast served by mangement for all our veterans at work, their families, and guests from the local VFW and other veterans groups.
Some of the guests gave speeches, The color guard lead us in ceremony, and at the end we donated $10k to the merchant marine veterans association, $2500 to the local VFW chapter, and $2500 to the SS lane victory preservation association.

The SS Lane Victory is a fully restored and functioning victory ship built in 1945 and is on display as museum in long beach harbor. IIRC it's the only WWII victory ship that is still sea worthy.

It's also where they filmed the engine scenes from sand pebbles and many other movies.
Welcome Aboard the S.S. Lane Victory

Dude, they don't have IED's in Virginia, deploy that thing over to the middle east where it can do some good! :p

finally, veterans day off

I was on Yankee Station in Nam in the mid 60's aboard a carrier. Made 3 cruises. In over 40 years of working, I had only 3 veterans days off when I worked at a bank. This year, at age 65, I am taking tomorrow off work. Will be doing that every year from now on. Life is way-y-y-y to short...
